At 9:00 a.m. on December 4, National Highway 1A, Gia Lam District (Hanoi) was bustling with the sound of engines and horns of many dump trucks, containers... running from Bac Ninh to National Highway 3 Hanoi and vice versa.
The National Highway 1A section passing through here is only about 8-10m wide, without a median strip, while receiving many trucks, containers... passing through every day.
Locals said that during rush hour, cars and large trucks line up in 2-3 rows, almost completely occupying the road, forcing motorbikes to weave through the gaps.
Witnessing many collisions between cars and motorbikes on National Highway 1A, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Ngoc (56 years old, Yen Vien town, Gia Lam) said that although the road is narrow, many trucks, container trucks... still drive very fast. At night, when the road is empty, many cars race each other, honking their horns loudly.
"There are also many motorcyclists who recklessly overtake or drive in the wrong direction, crossing the road without looking, so accidents are more likely to happen," said Mr. Ngoc, adding that in addition to serious accidents, minor collisions between vehicles happen "every day" on the above road section.
For many years, people who regularly travel on this road like Mr. Ngoc have been "waiting with bated breath" for the day the road is upgraded and renovated to ensure their safety.
Faced with the above situation, the Hanoi People's Committee recently assigned the Department of Transport to preside over and coordinate with the Gia Lam District People's Committee to urgently prepare a report proposing an investment policy in the form of public investment for National Highway 1A, from Duong New Bridge to the end of Gia Lam District (about 3.75km), send it to the Department of Planning and Investment for appraisal and report to the City People's Committee according to regulations.
Hanoi City assigned the Department of Planning and Investment to urgently review and update the investment project of National Highway 1A, the section from Duong New Bridge to the end of Gia Lam district mentioned above, into the city's medium-term public investment plan for 2021-2025, and report to the City People's Committee.
The Hanoi People's Committee also directed relevant units to organize traffic flow, ensure traffic order and safety, and reduce traffic congestion on National Highway 1A, from Duong Moi Bridge to the end of Gia Lam district.
