The project started in October 2021, on an area of 82.79 hectares in Van Ninh commune, Mong Cai city, invested by Van Ninh International Port Joint Stock Company.
After completion, the project will contribute to completing infrastructure and seaport services, promoting logistics, import-export and international trade.
Van Ninh Port is expected to play an important role in connecting goods between ASEAN and Northeast Asia, supporting the development of industry, trade, services, contributing to GRDP growth and budget revenue of Quang Ninh province.

Initially, the project was targeted to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2024. However, the progress is affected due to a lack of filling materials.
As of March 20, 2025, the progress of some items of the project such as the embankment protection has been 50m.
The port bridge project has completed 280/304 piles, has cast 3 prestressed concrete beams, and is carrying out excavation and cutting of piles to make bridge abutments.
Regarding the second filling package, the company is negotiating with sand suppliers, expected to be completed in March 2025.
The company is waiting for the document of the Provincial People's Committee approving the plan to build a 206.7m long bridge to replace a section of the road to the port.
Mr. Ho Quang Huy - Chairman of Mong Cai City People's Committee - said: "Currently, the investor is completing legal procedures to dredge the channel according to Decision No. 1579/QD-TTg issued by the Prime Minister on September 22, 2021 on Approving the Master Plan for the development of Vietnam's seaport system for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050.
Accordingly, Van Ninh port needs to have a channel depth of -9m to accommodate 20,000-ton ships".
"The project has been extended and the progress has been adjusted by the Provincial Economic Zone Management Board. According to the investor, having a progress extension certificate will be the basis for the bank to disburse capital, thereby speeding up the project's progress. The investor is committed to putting the port into operation in the first quarter of 2026," said Mr. Huy.
