Meanwhile, the old market next to it is seriously degraded, often flooded during heavy rains, making traders upset.
Old market degraded, new market left empty
Chien Dan Market is part of the Chien Dan Market Quarter project, approved by the old Quang Nam province in 2017 with a total cost of more than 130 billion VND, deployed on an area of nearly 10 hectares. The project is invested by Newland Quang Nam Real Estate Joint Stock Company.
The market project alone has a scale of 2 floors, an area of about 1,400m2, including a market cage, an operator's house, a kiosk for rent, a water supply and drainage system, wastewater treatment, fire prevention and fighting and other auxiliary items. Up to now, the items have been completed but there are no traders.

In contrast to the new, spacious but abandoned market, the old market nearby is still operating in shortage and shabby conditions. Every rainy season, the market floor is muddy, the roof is temporarily covered, and the flooding is prolonged.
"I have been selling here for nearly 15 years. When it rains, the floodwaters are everywhere, the goods are wet and odorful. We heard that the new market has been inaugurated but has not been moved to" - Ms. Tran Thi Thuy, a trader, shared.
Not only does flooding cause inconvenience to businesses, but the old market also poses a risk of food safety and hygiene, fire and explosion and loss of aesthetics.

What do businesses and localities say?
On March 7, 2025, Chien Dan market was inaugurated, a project to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the founding of Phu Ninh district (old) and the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of Quang Nam (old). However, nearly 4 months have passed, and the market is still in a state of "closed doors and bolts".
"The project is solid and modern, costing tens of billions of VND but left abandoned. As for the old market, traders have to endure, which is too wasteful. We look forward to moving to a more spacious and cleaner place of business every day, said Mr. Nguyen Van Binh, a resident living near the market.

The side of Newland Quang Nam Real Estate Joint Stock Company said that up to now, the unit has completed all construction items with a designed scale to serve more than 320 traders, accepted by the Department of Construction, and completed fire prevention and fighting procedures. The province has also concluded the project inspection.
"We are only an investment unit, and the arrangement of traders and management and operation is under the authority of local authorities. The enterprise has sent a document requesting the People's Committee of Phu Ninh district (old) to receive operation from April 2025 and be ready for full warranty" - Mr. Le Hoang Thu, Director of the company, said.

Talking to Lao Dong, Mr. Le Van Ninh - former Standing Deputy Secretary of Phu Ninh District Party Committee (old) - currently assigned to be Chairman of Chien Dan Commune, Da Nang City, where the new market is located - said that he has not yet received any handover documents related to the project.
"Regarding the shortcomings at Chien Dan market, the commune leaders have grasped the information and will coordinate with relevant parties to put the new market into operation as soon as possible" - Mr. Ninh said.
