On May 28, the People's Committee of Can Tho City issued Official Letter No. 2394/UBND-KT on the synchronous implementation of a number of tasks to promote sustainable durian production and export. The document aims to effectively implement the Prime Minister's instructions in Official Dispatch No. 71/CD-TTg dated May 23, 2025.
Accordingly, Chairman of the City People's Committee Truong Canh Tuyen assigned the Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment to preside over and coordinate with the Department of Industry and Trade, the City Police, the People's Committees of districts and related units to carry out the tasks according to Official Dispatch No. 71/CD-TTg.

Agencies need to synchronously deploy solutions to improve production capacity, ensure export quality and develop the durian consumption market sustainably. The Department of Agriculture and Environment is responsible for synthesizing and reporting arising issues to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment and the City People's Committee for timely coordination in handling in accordance with regulations.
According to the content of the Capital No. 71/CD-TTg, in 2024, the durian area across the country reached nearly 180,000 hectares, the output was estimated at 1.5 million tons, the export turnover of approximately 3.2 billion USD, accounting for 47% of the total value of fruit and vegetable exports. However, the export of durian faces many challenges due to additional control measures from the import market, the impact of climate change and rapid area expansion rate in some localities.
To ensure the sustainable development of the durian industry, the Prime Minister requested the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment to direct production according to the Project on developing key fruit trees by 2025 and 2030, complete regulations on management of growing area codes, packaging facilities, promote research on preservation, processing, consumption technology, quality management and traceability and expand export markets.

For the People's Committees of provinces and centrally run cities with durian growing areas, strictly control the area scale, monitor growing area codes, support the construction of sustainable linkages and ensure food safety and traceability.
Previously, in April 2025, Lao Dong Newspaper published a series of articles about spontaneous durian cultivation in the Mekong Delta. According to experts, the need to be done immediately and always be to standardize the process from durian production to export. Above all, it is necessary to clearly define the tasks and functions of competent agencies; must take drastic action to remove obstacles in the context of difficult exports.
