Businesses “surrender”, farmers reap bumper harvest of vegetables and tubers on sand

Ha Tinh - Cultivating on the same sandy land along the coast, one business failed and abandoned the land, while farmers had a bumper crop of vegetables, tubers, and fruits.

Farmers have a bumper crop.

According to Lao Dong Newspaper reporters, in the days leading up to the Lunar New Year, farmers in the coastal commune of Thach Van (Ha Tinh City) are gathering to harvest radishes in the vast vegetable and root fields.

Mr. Nguyen Van Ha (59 years old, residing in Bac Van village, Thach Van commune) said that his family produces vegetables and fruits on an area of 1 hectare including: radish, carrot, sweet potato, melon, eggplant, squash, etc.

From the beginning of September 2024, Mr. Ha's family started planting white radish, harvesting one crop every 45 days, then continuing to cultivate the new crop in a rolling manner.

“This year, radishes have a good harvest and good prices. The average yield is 2.5 tons/sao (500m2) with the selling price at the field from 8,000-10,000 VND/kg. With nearly 10 tons of radishes, my family earned nearly 100 million VND,” Mr. Ha shared.

According to Mr. Ha, the production of vegetables, tubers and fruits on sandy soil here takes place year-round, bringing economic efficiency many times higher than growing rice.

Currently, many local households have invested in automatic irrigation systems to each field, helping to reduce care work and at the same time helping plants grow well and produce high yields.

Wilderness in business projects

In contrast to the lush green vegetable and fruit fields of local farmers, the FLC High-tech Agriculture Project in Thach Van commune of FAM Ha Tinh Agricultural Products Production and Import-Export Trading Company Limited (under FLC Group) next door has been abandoned for many years, with weeds growing everywhere, wasting land, making farmers regretful and heartbroken.

On January 19, Mr. Duong Van Thai - Chairman of the People's Committee of Thach Van Commune - said that in Thach Van Commune, there are more than 13.5 hectares of barren sandy land along the coast that have been cultivated with vegetables, tubers and fruits by local people for many years. Of which, about 60-70% of the area is devoted to cultivating white radish.

There are about 60 households in Bac Van and Trung Van villages participating in the production of safe vegetables and fruits according to the linkage model at cooperatives and cooperative groups.

"The model of producing vegetables, tubers and fruits on poor sandy soil in Thach Van commune really brings high economic efficiency, stable product output, with an average annual income of about 100 million VND/household. This is the main and sustainable source of income for households, contributing to economic development and improving people's lives," Mr. Thai shared.

According to Mr. Thai, the FLC High-Tech Agriculture Project in Thach Van commune of FAM Ha Tinh Agricultural Products Production and Import-Export Trading Company Limited has been abandoned for many years, wasting land.

In many meetings, local people and government representatives have proposed revoking the project to implement other projects, or re-granting farming land to farmers to avoid prolonged land waste.

The Chairman of the People's Committee of Thach Van commune added that recently, the People's Committee of Ha Tinh province has decided to revoke the FLC High-tech Agriculture project in Thach Van commune.

"In the near future, when the enterprise finishes cleaning up the infrastructure and factories invested in the project, we will propose dividing the land of that project for farmers to grow vegetables, tubers, and fruits," said Mr. Thai.

In 2018, the People's Committee of Ha Tinh province approved the investment policy of FLC High-tech Agriculture Project in Thach Van commune for FAM Ha Tinh Company. The project will be implemented on an area of about 240 hectares, with a total estimated investment of 300 billion VND. The project will operate for 50 years.

The project's goal is to organize the cultivation and production of clean, quality, safe, nutritious vegetables and fruits... for domestic use and export.

The investor then renovated some areas, planted red-fleshed dragon fruit and some other plants, but they were ineffective, so the project was abandoned.
