At this time, farmers in the provinces and cities of the West are busy harvesting pineapples. The price of 11,000 - 14,000 VND/fruit, 3,000 - 4,000 VND higher than the same period last year, makes farmers excited.
In Hau Giang, after harvesting 3 hectares of pineapple, after deducting expenses, Mr. Huynh Duc Phong (Vi Thanh City, Hau Giang Province) earned a profit of over 250 million VND.
Mr. Phong said: "For the past 3 years, pineapple prices have been continuously increasing, the highest at this time. Thanks to a good harvest and good prices, this crop has brought in a lot of profit, my wife and I are very happy."
According to this farmer, although heavy rain has occurred in Hau Giang province in recent days, thanks to the closed dike system and clear internal canals, the impact on farmers' pineapple areas has been limited.
Besides, to sell pineapples at high prices, for many years now, farmers in the area have planted pineapples in different seasons, which gives them off-season fruits, thus bringing in high profits.
The high price of pineapples has made traders seek to buy, but the quantity purchased is still quite small because farmers have joined cooperatives and sold to businesses for processing.
"This time, I was only able to buy 8 tons of pineapple from an acquaintance to sell to the markets, while most farmers sold it all to the company," said Ms. Tran Tieu Vy (a pineapple trader in Hau Giang).
Mr. Pham Van Dien - Thanh Xuan Agricultural Cooperative, Hoa Tien Commune (Vi Thanh City, Hau Giang) - said: "Only pineapple trees can survive in this saline land. Over the past 40 years, thanks to pineapple, people here have had the conditions to develop their economy, many households have become well-off. On average, 1 hectare yields 20 tons. The selling price is from 5,000 - 13,000 VND/fruit. After deducting costs, growers earn about 150 million VND/ha."
Hau Giang currently has about 3,000 hectares of pineapple, concentrated in Vi Thanh City and Long My District. Vi Thanh City alone grows about 2,700 hectares of Queen pineapple and has successfully built the Cau Duc pineapple brand.
Pineapple is one of the key agricultural products according to the agricultural development program of Hau Giang province in the period of 2021 - 2025, the target by 2025 is the pineapple growing area of 3,500 hectares, the output is 45,000 tons/year.
