The 2025 Summer-Autumn rice crop is being harvested in many localities in the Mekong Delta. However, according to actual records, rice productivity this year has decreased significantly, production costs have increased, causing farmers' profits to not reach expectations.
In Luong Tam commune (Can Tho city), Mr. Nguyen Van Thuong has just harvested 1.4 hectares of OM 18 rice with a yield of only about 7 tons/ha, down nearly 2 tons compared to the same period last year. With a selling price of VND6,400/kg, after deducting expenses, the family still makes a profit of about VND25 million.
"When rice sprouts, there is rain, many epidemics, causing rice productivity and quality to decrease. The production cost also increased to about 500,000 VND, at 2.4 million VND/1,000 m2. Meanwhile, rice prices are 2,000 VND/kg lower than last year, so profits are greatly affected," said Mr. Thuong.
Similarly, Mr. Tran Van Thang in the same area has just harvested 1.5 hectares of rice, with a yield of only about 5.7 - 5.8 tons/ha. Although the enterprise guaranteed a price of VND 6,550/kg, higher than the general level, the profit was not significant.
"The period of rice sprouting and experiencing prolonged rain due to the influence of the tropical depression, lack of sunshine, and high humidity is a favorable condition for many types of pests to arise, making care difficult. The price of fertilizers and pesticides this year continues to increase sharply, causing production costs to increase, this crop is considered a break-even crop", Mr. Thang shared.
Not only are harvested households facing difficulties, many farmers are also worried. Mr. Nguyen Van Con in Luong Tam commune (Can Tho city) said that his rice field has about 15 days left to harvest, but every day he has to go to the fields to monitor.
"It rained continuously, I was afraid that the rice would fall, so I had to pump water and prevent flooding. This crop has been attacked by diseases and erosion since the rice sprouts. Despite careful care, the rice is still poor, with an estimated yield of only 7 - 8 tons/ha. The enterprise valued the purchase price at VND6,500/kg, but with the production cost of up to VND25 million/ha, it was only equitable. I just hope that the harvest will increase so that I can make a profit," said Mr. Con.
Recorded during the day in many localities, rice purchasing activities are still slow, prices remain stable.
In Ca Mau, purchasing power is weak, rice prices fluctuate slightly. In the Can Tho area, traders buy in moderation, trade is deserted, rice prices remain stable. In An Giang, traders have a need to buy but the low price makes farmers not interested in selling. In Dong Thap, farmers continue to have high prices, demand for buying and selling is sluggish, not as vibrant as in previous years.
Fresh rice prices continue to be stable today. OM 18 rice is at 6,000 - 6,200 VND/kg; IR 50404 fluctuates at 5,700 - 5,800 VND/kg; OM 380 remains at 5,700 - 5,900 VND/kg; OM 5451 rice fluctuates at 5,900 - 6,000 VND/kg; Nang Hoa 9 rice is at 6,100 - 6,200 VND/kg; Dai Thom 8 rice is currently at 6,100 - 6,200 VND/kg.
