HCMC - Vegetable prices at markets and supermarkets in HCMC continue to increase. Ho Chi Minh City has stepped up the implementation of promotions and market monitoring to stabilize supply and prices.

Recorded at Thu Duc market on the morning of November 19, Ms. Nguyen Be - a vegetable trader said that the prices of some vegetables were still higher than normal, even some leafy vegetables continued to increase by several thousand VND/kg compared to the beginning of the week.

Meanwhile, consumers have to consider spending more due to high prices. Most green vegetables have increased in price and spoiled quickly, so I have to switch to buying tubers and reduce the amount I buy. Hopefully in the coming days, prices will be more stable so that people can shop with peace of mind" - Ms. Ngoc Lam (Dien Hong ward) shared.

At traditional markets, green onions cost 70,000-90,000 VND/kg, previously only about 30,000-40,000 VND/kg, water spinach 70,000 - 90,000 VND/kg, lettuce cost 60,000-80,000 VND/kg, tomatoes 40,000-50,000 VND/kg, cucumbers 35,000 VND/kg...

"The price of 1 kg of green vegetables is now almost equal to the price of 1 kg of pork. Today, going to the market for about 100,000 VND but only buying vegetables for a family of 5 people in a day. If the price of vegetables continues to increase, I will have to calculate more carefully, I may have to reduce the number of vegetable meals per week to balance the budget" - Ms. Nguyen Thi Lai (living in Vuon Lai ward) shared.

At supermarket systems such as Co.op Mart, MM Market, Go!, Aeon, vegetable prices also increased slightly compared to normal days. Supermarkets have launched many incentive programs and promotions for some vegetables to stimulate demand.

A representative of MM Mega Market said that with the advantage of operating 3 vegetable and fruit platforms in Da Lat, Moc Chau and Tien Giang, supermarkets still have an abundant source of high-quality goods despite unfavorable weather conditions.

In the coming time, we will continue to monitor the market to make reasonable adjustments, and at the same time implement promotional programs to bring maximum benefits to customers - said the supermarket representative.

At wholesale markets in Ho Chi Minh City, about 60-70% of vegetables supplied to Ho Chi Minh City are imported from specialized areas in the Mekong Delta and Lam Dong province. Vegetable prices at wholesale markets have also increased rapidly, due to heavy rain and tides causing heavy damage in growing areas, making harvesting and transportation difficult.

At Thu Duc Agricultural Food Market, in recent days, the amount of vegetables coming to the market has been at 1,600-1,700 tons/day.

Meanwhile, at Hoc Mon agricultural food wholesale market, the amount of vegetables coming to the market reached 1,478 tons/day, an increase of nearly 300 tons compared to the beginning of the week.

Regarding price management, Mr. Nguyen Nguyen Phuong - Deputy Director of the Department of Industry and Trade of Ho Chi Minh City said that production and business activities have signs of recovery, but the group of fresh food is still fluctuating strongly due to extreme weather such as heavy rain, rising water, and prolonged cold air, causing vegetable and agricultural product output to decrease sharply.

The changing rules of supply and demand make prices increase, making it difficult to decrease immediately. However, the Market Stabilization Program has prepared plans for businesses to maintain stable prices for a certain period of time, including importing or coordinating goods from other regions when needed.

Despite the increase in production costs, enterprises participating in the program clearly understand their social responsibility and commit to keeping prices according to the registration. This is an important factor to help the market avoid taking advantage of difficulties to unreasonably increase prices.

When the market is stable again, farmers have the motivation to expand production, thereby increasing output, helping to have abundant supply and contributing to more sustainable stability in the coming time.

Talking to Lao Dong, Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen - General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association commented that these are only temporary difficulties caused by consecutive natural disasters and extreme weather. "Fruit and vegetable production will soon stabilize again after production is restored after natural disasters. In the coming time, vegetable prices will stabilize again thanks to the amount of imported vegetables as well as stabilizing production by the people", said Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen.

On the side of the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection (Ministry of Agriculture and Environment), it said that it has implemented many recommendations to farmers to restore production to stabilize vegetable supply for the peak season at the end of the year.
