Previously, when going to the market, Ms. Le Thi Hue (living in District 3) often bought about 1 kg of pork, but now she only buys about 0.5 kg or buys chicken for her family to use.
"The price of pork is at a high level, if I buy it like before, I will have a shortfall in marketage costs for one day, so I have to consider it" - Ms. Hue said.
According to Lao Dong on March 10, at traditional markets in Ho Chi Minh City, with prices increasing by about VND15,000-20,000/kg of pork compared to before Tet, purchasing power has decreased sharply, some traders have temporarily stopped selling, while the rest try to do business with resilience to keep the deal.
In the context of the pig farming industry having gone through a long period of epidemics, the total herd has decreased sharply, production costs have increased, many businesses are hesitant to herd again. However, some large enterprises and large-scale farms still maintain operations thanks to the industrial production process.
According to Mr. Nguyen Nguyen Phuong - Deputy Director of the Department of Industry and Trade of Ho Chi Minh City, this contributes to screening spontaneous livestock facilities, aiming for the overall livestock to be on a systematic trajectory, ensuring disease safety.
Current prices are ensuring production costs and encouraging livestock farmers to herd. When the product life cycle is stable, supply increases, prices will gradually decrease" - Mr. Phuong commented.
Faced with the increase in pork prices, the Department of Finance, the Department of Industry and Trade and relevant authorities are studying to increase the supply of poultry, to ensure price balance and ensure choices for consumers.
Mr. Phuong added that only some popular types of pork have increased in price strongly, while other types of meat are still stable.
"The city will promote other products with lower purchasing power, in order to increase diversity in choices for people" - Mr. Phuong emphasized.
Authorities affirmed that Ho Chi Minh City currently does not lack pork supply, so consumers can shop with peace of mind.
