World oil prices today
World oil prices continue to fluctuate strongly. At the end of the trading session on June 9, oil prices simultaneously decreased by about 3%, to the lowest level in 7 weeks. WTI oil closed at 88.20 USD/barrel, down 3.10 USD/barrel, equivalent to a decrease of 3.4%; while Brent oil decreased by 2.8 USD/barrel, down to 91.45 USD/barrel, equivalent to a decrease of 3%.
The drop in oil prices took place after Iran and Israel announced the cessation of attacks on each other at the call of US President Donald Trump. According to analysts, the cooling of tensions in the Middle East has significantly reduced concerns about the risk of disruption to global oil supplies.
In addition, recent statements by President Donald Trump that the conflict with Iran could end in the next 2-3 days when negotiations have entered the final stage also strengthen market expectations about the possibility of soon reaching an agreement, thereby continuing to put pressure on oil prices.
However, geopolitical risks have not completely disappeared. Iran currently maintains measures restricting most maritime transport activities through the Strait of Hormuz - a strategic shipping route that transports about 20% of the world's crude oil and liquefied natural gas supplies. Meanwhile, the US continues to impose blockade measures on Iranian seaports.
However, according to the US Energy Agency, ship traffic through the Gulf region and oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz are gradually recovering, showing that the risk of supply disruption has somewhat eased, although negotiations between the US and Iran to end the conflict that has lasted for more than three months have not made much significant progress.
In addition to geopolitical factors, the prospect of weakening consumption demand in China is also creating more pressure on the oil market. In May, China's crude oil imports fell by 29%, to the lowest level in 8 years, raising concerns about the demand of the world's largest oil importing economy.
