Fearing an outbreak, farmers sell early
In recent days, due to the influence of high tides and heavy rains, many low-lying areas in the Mekong Delta have been deeply submerged in water. Flooding has affected the pig farm of Mr. Quang Van Thach (Nga Nam town, Soc Trang province).
Mr. Thach said: "The water has risen and flooded the barn, the pigs have been wading around for the past few days, I have had to use sandbags and soil to cover the holes to prevent water from entering. The water has flooded, the barn is not clean, the biggest fear is pollution and the pigs will get sick."
To ensure safety and prevent disease outbreaks after the flood recedes, Mr. Thach contacted traders to sell early while pork prices are high.
Meanwhile, Ms. Tran Kim Cuong (Long My town, Hau Giang province) took advantage of the opportunity to sell 15 pigs before the high tide arrived. "I sold them a week ago, earlier than planned, so the water level rose, and the rain and wind made cleaning very difficult. Right at the time of high prices, after selling, I made a profit of 18 million VND," Ms. Cuong said.
To prevent epidemics and ensure livestock farming during the rainy and stormy season, the functional sector of Hau Giang province has also conducted inspections, propaganda, general cleaning, and spraying disinfectants for household livestock farming areas, grazing grounds, and places where live animals and animal products are collected for trading and business, etc.
Pork prices rise after storms
According to records at some traditional markets in Can Tho City such as Xuan Khanh, Tan An, Ba Bo,... pork is sold by traders at prices ranging from 105,000 - 215,000 VND/kg. At supermarkets, pork prices range from 105,000 - 263,000 VND/kg, depending on the type.
Ms. Nguyen Thi My (a trader at Ba Bo market, Binh Thuy district, Can Tho city) said that the price of pork has increased from 5,000 - 20,000 VND/kg compared to 2 months ago.
"The storms and epidemics have affected the supply, and prices at slaughterhouses and wholesale markets are high. Furthermore, it is near the end of the year, so the demand for ham and sausage is high, so the price of pork has also increased," said Ms. My.
To stabilize the market, Can Tho City People's Committee previously issued an official dispatch on strengthening price management and operation and ensuring the supply of essential goods in the city.
Accordingly, the People's Committee of Can Tho City assigned relevant units to promote information work, transparency of information on prices; closely monitor market price developments, especially essential food and foodstuffs for people, prevent shortages, price speculation, and strictly handle acts of taking advantage of emergencies, incidents, disasters, natural disasters, etc.
