Explaining why Vietnam's fiber optic internet is accelerating its world ranking

Mimi Trần |

Vietnam's fixed internet speed in August ranked 10th in the global ranking, while mobile internet ranked 16th. Thus, this is the first time Vietnam has had both mobile and fixed networks in the top 20 global markets for speed.

Statistics from Ookla, the unit behind Speedtest tools, show that in August, Vietnam's fixed internet network reached 261.8 Mbps, ranking 10th in the global ranking, far exceeding the 33rd position announced in March 2025. This result is higher than many countries such as Switzerland, Denmark, and China. In which Viettel leads Vietnam with a speed of 272.9Mbps (higher than the 8th largest country in the world, Iceland). Thus, Viettel's internet speed has increased sharply by 58% since the beginning of 2025, contributing greatly to the growth of Vietnam's internet ranking.

This result is similar to the announcement of the iSpeed system - an Internet access quality measurement system developed by the Vietnam Internet Center (VNNIC). Accordingly, fixed Internet in Vietnam reached a speed of 271.2 Mbps in August 2025, of which Viettel reached the highest with 318.71 Mbps; VNPT (247.77Mbps) and FPT (121.59Mpbs).

Many reasons for the strong acceleration of the Vietnamese internet

According to experts, this growth result comes from many factors, including businesses investing in adding marine fiber optic infrastructure, inland fiber optic cables, and the proactive upgrading of domestic connection infrastructure by network operators.

A representative of Viettel network - the unit with the top speed in both domestic and international rankings shared that Resolution 57-NQ/TW on breakthroughs in science, technology, innovation and national digital transformation has created a strong motivation for Viettel to deploy a series of modern solutions and technologies such as XGS-PON, popularization of WiFi 6, towards implementing Wifi 7. In addition, Viettel also promotes the upgrading of marine fiber optic infrastructure, deploying fiber optic infrastructure up to 500,000 Km, covering 100% of villages - ready to provide high-bandwidth packages from rural to urban areas, from individuals to corporate customers.

XGS-PON optical transmission technology has opened a new day street with a symmetrical speed of 10 Gbps, 8-10 times faster than the previous GPON technology. This means that users can watch 8K videos, play VR games, and operate a smart home at the same time. More importantly, XGS-PON allows more devices to access, reducing latency - a prerequisite for future applications such as large-scale IoT, smart cities, remote healthcare or digital education.

Currently, Viettel operates 5 major international fiber optic cables - accounting for 65% of Vietnam's total international connection capacity, helping data from our country go directly to major regional centers such as Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, and further into Europe and Africa.

Further, according to the national strategy, by 2030, Vietnam will have at least 10 new cable lines, reaching a total of 15. In particular, Viettel aims to participate in and exploit at least 5 of these routes, and especially, will completely master at least one route directly connecting Vietnam - Singapore, expected to be operational in 2028.

At the same time, in April 2025, for the 5th consecutive time, Viettel will increase bandwidth for customers, raising the minimum bandwidth from 150 Mbps to 300 Mbps, bringing a high-speed and stable internet experience to customers. Viettel aims to have 100% of users access the internet at speeds above 1Gbps by 2030.

Along with that, Viettel has proactively supported the replacement of old wifi equipment with a new 2-band device using Wifi 6 technology, aiming to deploy Wifi 7 in 2026. The new technology supports a maximum speed of 10 Gbps, 3 times faster than WiFi 5. This technology improves coverage and connectivity while many devices ensure a smooth experience when watching 4K videos, playing online games or livestreaming. Automatic band selection mode helps optimize speed based on user position.

Thereby, Viettel not only affirms its No. 1 position in internet speed but also brings an outstanding connection experience, meeting the increasing demand of users nationwide.

Viettel internet promotion program

From 05:08/2025 - 30.9.2025, successfully connecting to the new network, Viettel Internet packages will receive discounts of up to 348K, specifically:

Immediately reduce 29,000 VND in subscriber fees in the month following the month of service acceptance when KH pays monthly fees.

Immediately reduce 174,000 VND in subscription fees (equivalent to 29,000 VND x 6 months) when KH pays 6 months in advance.

Immediately reduce 348,000 VND in subscription fees (equivalent to 29,000 VND x 12 months) when KH pays 12 months in advance.
