Since the beginning of July, many households in the North and Central regions have reflected that electricity bills in June increased sharply, in some cases increasing 2-3 times compared to the previous month. Although admitting that the demand for air conditioning increased due to prolonged heat, many people are still concerned about the increase in electricity bills.
Explaining this issue, a representative of Northern Power Corporation (EVNNPC) said that in June 2026, especially in the last days of the month, intense heat appeared widely in the North. Prolonged high temperatures caused the demand for using air conditioners, fans, refrigerators and cooling equipment to increase significantly, especially at noon, evening and at night.
In 17 northern provinces and cities managed by EVNNPC selling electricity, excluding Hanoi, electricity demand has increased to a very high level during peak heat waves.
According to records, on June 24, the maximum capacity in EVNNPC reached 21,142 MW, exceeding the 21,000 MW mark for the first time and is the highest level ever.
Electricity consumption on June 24 reached 440.658 million kWh, at a very high level during peak heat waves.
Following that, on June 25, electricity consumption in EVNNPC reached 447.602 million kWh, the largest daily output recorded during the peak heat wave at the end of June.
In particular, the demand for electricity in the evening is recorded at a very high level.
EVNNPC believes that when outdoor temperatures rise, cooling devices often have to operate with higher intensity. Air conditioners need more time to bring room temperatures back to the set level; refrigerators also have to operate more frequently to maintain stable cold, especially when the refrigerator door is opened many times or more food is brought in during the day.
Therefore, in some cases, even if the number of hours of device use does not change too much compared to the previous month, electricity consumption may still increase because the device has to work in harsher weather conditions.
If the air conditioner is set to a low temperature, the room is not closed, direct sunlight shines, or the equipment has not been cleaned for a long time, electricity consumption may increase significantly.
Besides weather factors, June is also the time for students to take summer vacation. Many families have more children at home, the time spent using TVs, computers, wifi, fans, air conditioners and other household appliances is longer than in previous months. When many devices are used simultaneously, especially during peak evening hours, total electricity consumption in the day can increase rapidly.
To be proactive in the process of using electricity, customers can monitor electricity output, meter readings, bills and electricity service information through the customer care application of the Electricity industry. The EVN customer care application allows customers to look up information related to meter reading schedules, electricity bills, payment status and electricity service registration.
In the summer, EVNNPC recommends customers to use electricity reasonably in some simple ways: set the air conditioner to 26°C or higher and combine with using fans; close the doors tightly, limit direct sunlight when turning on the air conditioner; clean and maintain the air conditioner and refrigerator periodically; turn off the equipment when not in use; limit the simultaneous use of many high-capacity devices during peak hours.
Customers should also pay attention to checking the electrical system in the family, especially wires, sockets, old equipment or locations with risk of electrical leakage after the meter. If electricity consumption increases abnormally while living habits do not change, customers need to contact the electricity unit for inspection support.
