With the rapid development of the e-commerce market and the presence of a series of domestic retail e-commerce platforms such as Shopee, TikTok Shop, Lazada, Tiki and Sendo,... and the invasion of cross-border platforms and e-commerce business providers, digital platforms such as Facebook, Apple, TikTok, Google,... Vietnamese e-commerce continues to maintain an impressive growth rate.
According to a report by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Vietnam's e-commerce market has a growth rate of 18 - 25% per year. In 2023, Vietnam's e-commerce recorded a growth rate of 25%, with revenue reaching 20.5 billion USD. It is forecasted that in 2024, the market size will exceed 25 billion USD.
With the strong growth of the e-commerce market, the issue of market management and tax collection management in this field is receiving great attention from authorities and public opinion.
Recently, when explaining at the discussion session on budget and public investment, Party Central Committee member, Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc said that tax authorities will have new tools to control revenue and sales on e-commerce platforms. The tax sector applies artificial intelligence (AI) in controlling tax revenue with e-commerce platforms, especially cross-border platforms. This is one of the solutions to prevent tax loss through this channel.
In the context of strong e-commerce development as it is today, the tax authorities' flexibility, changing management methods and having new tools in the digital age to strengthen management and supervision to prevent tax losses in the e-commerce sector is considered a new step forward for the tax industry.
In recent years, tax revenue from e-commerce has increased steadily over the years with participation not only from domestic enterprises, but also from transnational platforms.
According to the General Department of Taxation, tax revenue from e-commerce activities in the first 11 months of 2024 exceeded 100,000 billion VND. Organizations and individuals with e-commerce business activities paid about 108,000 billion VND, an increase of 22% compared to the average tax amount in the first 11 months of 2023.
