On May 27, according to Lao Dong's source, amidst a sharp decrease in electricity mobilization demand and volatile energy markets, the production activities of Na Duong Coal Company and Na Duong Thermal Power Company are facing many difficulties.
A series of problems related to coal consumption, production costs and site clearance for the coal mine expansion project continue to put pressure on two large enterprises in Lang Son province.
Accordingly, in the first 4 months of 2026, Na Duong Coal Company exploited more than 68,300 tons of raw coal, reaching about 81% compared to the same period last year; revenue reached more than 242 billion VND.
Na Duong Thermal Power Company produced more than 197 million kWh of electricity, revenue of about 320 billion VND but negative profit of more than 38 billion VND.
The main reason comes from the sharp decrease in electricity mobilization demand. At one point, Na Duong Thermal Power Plant had to stop one unit in 109 shifts, even stop both units simultaneously in 26 shifts.
This leads to a decrease in coal consumption, directly affecting the production and business activities of both units.
Not only facing the output problem, businesses also bear cost pressure when the quality of mined coal currently does not fully meet the requirements for electricity production.
To maintain operation, the unit has to mix in other types of coal with higher costs. Meanwhile, fuel prices, especially diesel, continue to increase sharply, causing production costs to increase significantly.
One of the major bottlenecks currently is the progress of site clearance for the Na Duong coal mine capacity expansion project.
According to the 2026 plan, the project needs to clear more than 104 hectares of land, but by the first 4 months of the year, only about 11.7 hectares have been implemented, equivalent to more than 11% of the plan.
Lang Son Provincial People's Committee assessed that the implementation process still faces many obstacles related to cadastral records, determining the origin of land use and coordination with some households.
This directly affects the progress of expanding the mining site and the ability to supply coal for electricity production in the coming time.
Faced with the above situation, leaders of the Provincial People's Committee requested departments, branches and related localities to focus on removing difficulties for businesses in the direction of clear responsibility and clear progress.
People's Committees of Na Duong and Loi Bac communes are assigned to develop detailed plans for compensation, site clearance and resettlement, to be completed before May 30.
Na Duong Coal Company is required to accelerate the remaining items of the coal mine expansion project such as environmental settlement pits, dustproofing system, Tong Danh stream rectification; and at the same time optimize production organization, improve coal quality to serve power generation.
Meanwhile, Na Duong Thermal Power Company continues to deploy an external sulfur discharge system (FGD), research to shorten the power generation shutdown time to construct system connections and find solutions to reuse ash and slag to reduce environmental pressure.
Na Duong Thermal Power Plant is located in Na Duong commune, Lang Son province, managed and operated by Na Duong Thermal Power Company - TKV.
This is currently the largest thermal power plant operating in the province with 2 generating units, with a total capacity of about 111 MW.
The commercial power plant has been operating since 2004, using coal from Na Duong mine to generate electricity, contributing to ensuring energy security in the Northeast region.
