On April 6, in an exchange with a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Hoang Trong Binh - Deputy General Director of Vung Ang II Thermal Power Co., Ltd. said that up to this point, the remediation of the coal storage warehouse collapse of Vung Ang II Thermal Power Plant caused by storm No. 10 in 2025 has not been completed.
According to Mr. Binh, the installation of equipment inside the coal warehouse has been completed, but the roof has only been repaired about 10%, and it is expected to be repaired by September 2026.
Regarding the solution to overcome the coal storage roof, it still retains the design, without changing the area, we only increase the thickness of the steel pipes, increase the load-bearing capacity of the steel pipes and bolts," Mr. Binh shared.
Also according to Mr. Binh, it is estimated that the cost of repairing the damage to the coal storage shelf (excluding equipment) caused by storm No. 10 will cost about 20 million USD. These losses are partially paid by the insurance company.
The Deputy General Director of Vung Ang II Thermal Power Co., Ltd. also informed that, according to the plan, tomorrow (April 7), Unit No. 2 of Vung Ang II Thermal Power Plant will officially go into operation. Previously, in March 2026, this Unit No. 2 was successfully test-operated.
Vung Ang II Thermal Power Plant is invested by Vung Ang II Thermal Power Co., Ltd. (VAPCO), started construction at the end of 2021, with a total investment of about 2.2 billion USD.
The plant is located in Vung Ang ward, Vung Ang Economic Zone, Ha Tinh province. According to the design, the plant has 2 units with a total designed capacity of 1,330 MW (capacity of each unit 665 MW).
On July 22, 2025, Unit No. 1 was officially put into commercial operation.
