In the days leading up to Tet Nguyen Dan, many streets such as Hoang Thi Loan, Ho Tung Mau, Nguyen Sinh Sac, Le Dai Hanh (Da Nang City), the ornamental plant market becomes bustling.
Many large ornamental kumquat trees, elaborately shaped, priced up to tens of millions of VND, have been brought down to the streets by gardeners, ready to serve the Tet playing needs of the people.
This year, ornamental kumquat trees are not only diverse in style and size but also meticulously invested from shaping the canopy, bending the shape to caring for fruits and leaves. Many "giant" kumquat trees from 2-5 meters high, with wide canopies and ripe fruits from the root to the top are advertised for sale at prices ranging from 15 to nearly 30 million VND/tree.
In this year's Tet kumquat crop, Mr. Nguyen Te Nhan (Cam Le ward, Da Nang) brought more than 200 ornamental kumquat pots to the market. According to Mr. Nhan, among these, there are many high-end trees, carefully cared for and of high value.
The most expensive kumquat tree this year is priced at nearly 30 million VND. The remaining trees are priced from a few million VND. These are all trees that have been cared for for many years, have beautiful shapes, and uniform fruits, suitable for display at agencies and hotels during the Lunar New Year," Mr. Nhan shared.
Also according to Mr. Nhan, to have a standard kumquat tree for Tet sale, gardeners must invest effort in care for a whole year, even many years in a row.
From variety selection, shaping, flower incubation, fruit nourishment to pest and disease prevention, everything must be carefully calculated. In addition, gardeners must also monitor weather conditions to take care of the trees.
Mr. Bui Quoc Khanh (Hoa Khanh ward, Da Nang city) said that this year his family imported hundreds of kumquat trees of various sizes, with selling prices ranging from several million to tens of millions of VND per tree.
These days, I continuously bring kumquats to the streets to serve the Tet market of the people. Among them, kumquat trees priced from 1–3 million VND are chosen and ordered very early by many people," Mr. Khanh said.
At the time of Tet, Mr. Nguyen Cong Vu (Thanh Khe ward, Da Nang city) chose to buy kumquats early to have more choices. Mr. Vu said that the kumquat pot he bought has a balanced shape, ripe fruits and lush green leaves, suitable for Tet display.
My family often chooses beautiful kumquats, because that way the new year will be smooth and the family reunites. I see that the price of kumquats every year is stable, some beautiful trees are priced higher because of a lot of care, so I find it reasonable," Mr. Vu said.
According to garden owners, at the time of Tet, the purchasing power of ornamental kumquat trees is gradually increasing, especially trees with beautiful shapes, abundant fruit and even ripeness. The closer to Lunar New Year, the number of people coming to visit, choose and buy ornamental kumquat trees on the streets of Da Nang will continue to be bustling.
