Mr. Nguyen Van Hong's family in My Binh commune, Nga Nam town cultivates 1 hectare of summer -autumn rice, variety OM18. Mr. Hong said the weather is favorable, there are few pests and diseases, and the rice plants are growing quite well. When the rice was about to be harvested, there was a thunderstorm and it fell, but the purchasing price of the rice was 10-20% higher, so the family was very excited.
“The price of fresh rice in the field is 600 - 1,000 VND/kg higher than the same period last year. In addition, production costs for this crop decreased by 1 - 2 million VND/ha, so after deducting costs, the profit was over 30 million VND/ha, an increase of over 10 million VND compared to previous Summer-Autumn crops," Mr. Hong said.
Similarly, in this year's summer-autumn crop, Mr. Le Van Banh in My Tu commune, My Tu district also had a profit of nearly 20 million VND from 7,000 square meters of rice.
“Due to the impact of heavy rain , the rice harvest was 3 days late, a part of the rice area was collapsed, but the yield still reached over 7 tons/ha, an increase of 1 ton over the same period. Fresh rice sold in the field costs 7,200 VND/kg. Compared to previous summer-autumn crops, this crop is a big winner," Mr. Banh said.
Similarly, at Tan Loc Thanh Cooperative, Nga Nam town, nearly 300 hectares have been harvested, with a yield of about 55 tons/ha. The price of rice traders buy at the field ranges from 7,600 - 7,800 VND/kg, excluding costs for farmers with profits of 35 million VND/ha or more.
Mr. Tran Hung Cuong - Director of Tan Loc Thanh Cooperative said that in the recent Summer-Autumn rice crops, farmers only earned a profit of 15 - 20 million VND/hectare. This year alone, high rice prices combined with production in sample fields , reduced costs, and increased profits of about 15 million VND/hectare, so farmers are very excited.
According to actual records, current rice prices are tending to increase slightly from 25 - 225 VND/kg. Currently, the price of regular rice ranges from 7,000 - 7,650 VND/kg, the price of light fragrant rice ranges from 7,500 - 7,700 VND/kg and the price of specialty rice ranges from 7,600 - 9,400 VND/kg. With current rice prices, rice farmers' profits have increased by 20-30% over the same period.
According to the Economic Department of Nga Nam town (Soc Trang province), entering the rainy season, the harvest stage is affected, some rice areas are collapsed, and the harvest progress is slow. There are currently nearly 2,000/18,500 hectares of rice being harvested.
The professional industry is coordinating with local authorities to increase pumping at electric and oil pumping stations; Mobilize people (in areas outside the dike) to reinforce the embankment to install drainage pumps, and mobilize on-site harvesters to take advantage of the no-rain weather to harvest rice.
According to the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection of Soc Trang province, in the 2024 Summer-Autumn rice crop, the whole province sowed 140,436 hectares, harvested about 31,843 hectares, concentrated in the districts of My Tu, Thanh Tri, Chau Thanh, Ke Sach , Nga Nam town. Average productivity is estimated at 54.8 tons/ha, output 174,500 tons.
