According to the "Coal Export Plan for the period 2026 - 2030" recently approved by the Government, the Vietnam National Coal - Mineral Industries Group (TKV) will be allowed to export a maximum of 3 million tons of coal/year.
Previously, according to the national energy plan until 2030, TKV was allowed to export 2-3 million tons of beautiful coal per year ( Gravel of all kinds and coal of 6.8...). These are types of coal with high economic value, but rarely used domestically, to contribute to balancing finance and production costs for TKV, because most of TKV's coal output is for thermal power plants, but is sold at a lower production cost, to contribute to ensuring energy security.
However, one of the main reasons why the amount of coal exported is not as expected is because the granting of coal export licenses has long been carried out every year - that is, the license must be applied for in each year of export.
Meanwhile, applying for an export license usually takes 3-4 months, making it difficult for both TKV and coal buyers to proactively produce, trade, and buy and sell coal.
In 2023, TKV's coal exports reached only over 840,000 tons and in 2024 they also fluctuated at the above level.
To overcome the above situation, from August 2023, TKV has proposed to the Government, relevant ministries and branches to allow coal exports under the license for 5 years, instead of the current one-year license.
According to TKV, with the "Coal Export Plan for the period 2026 - 2030", which allows TKV to export a maximum of 3 million tons of coal/year, both TKV and its partners will be more proactive, since the last months of the previous year, they have had to have a plan to prepare for the whole year, so if they wait for the license as before, the partners will often go buy elsewhere.
At a recent meeting with TKV's major coal importers in Hanoi, representatives of many corporations and partner companies, such as Marubeni (Japan), Oxbow (Netherlands), Genesco (Korea) ... acknowledged and highly appreciated TKV's role in the global coal supply chain.
All opinions expressed confidence that TKV's 5-year coal export plan (2026 - 2030) recently approved by the Vietnamese Government will open up many new cooperation opportunities, while committing to long-term cooperation and opening up many new cooperation opportunities with TKV in the future...
