Ho Chi Minh City is strategically orienting itself to become a leading logistics - seaport center in Southeast Asia.

On September 11, in a thematic session with the theme of cooperation in seaport and logistics development (in the framework of the Ho Chi Minh City Friendship Dialogue Conference 2026 - FD 2026), the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction shared about the local seaport development orientation in the coming time.

According to the Department of Construction, in the context of the marine economy and logistics becoming important growth drivers of the country, the Ho Chi Minh City seaport system is entering a new stage of development, larger scale, more strategic role and is expected to make stronger contributions to the key economic region in the South and the whole country.

Currently, Ho Chi Minh City's seaport system has expanded its scope to the important container river port system on the Dong Nai - Saigon axis and the Cai Mep - Thi Vai deep-water port cluster... This has made Ho Chi Minh City the largest inter-regional seaport - logistics coordination center in the country.

According to the plan and growth forecast, by 2030, vision 2050, Ho Chi Minh City will become the leading logistics - seaport center in Southeast Asia, capable of directly competing with major ports in Asia and the world. At the same time, the transformation to a green port - smart port model is also a trend that must be implemented.

Based on that, Ho Chi Minh City prioritizes strategic orientation for seaport development revolving around 3 key tasks including: Promoting investment in port infrastructure systems, transportation systems connecting the port system with logistics centers and production areas; Building mechanisms and policies to promote the development of port infrastructure, inland waterways and waterway transport; Building mechanisms to facilitate trade for goods through ports with special mechanisms such as free trade zones and open ports.

These orientations will help optimize cargo flows, reduce logistics costs, increase competitiveness and increase attractiveness to international shipping routes; as well as help reduce administrative procedures and costs, time for businesses....

In the thematic session, delegates also contributed many opinions through presentations and development practices at localities and businesses on green transformation, carbon neutrality solutions at seaports; increasing competitiveness through logistics ecosystems, local foreign affairs from connecting relationships to connecting supply chains;... and some practical cooperation desires in the coming time.

The above opinions are recorded by Ho Chi Minh City, and will coordinate with localities and international partners to research and exchange to move towards building and forming a multilateral cooperation mechanism between port cities in the network of friendly cities in the coming time.
