The Premier League traditionally plays on Boxing Day. It is one of the few major leagues to play during the festive season, along with Italy's Serie A. Matches are played from Christmas to New Year's Day.
Boxing Day is a national holiday in the United Kingdom, established in 1871, celebrated every year after Christmas. The exact origin is unknown, but the name is believed to have come from the practice of employers giving their employees Christmas boxes on December 26 and giving them the day off.
The English top flight began playing on Boxing Day in 1888, hoping to boost attendances. With the day off work, people would flock outside to watch football.
This year, the Premier League and the Championship will also hold almost all of their fixtures on Boxing Day. For the Premier League, the organizers will allocate most of the Round 18 matches on December 26, with a few matches on December 27 (UK time).
