Sustainable development is a strategic requirement
The Earth is facing a major challenge of climate change, which directly affects all aspects of human life. At the COP26 Conference, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh pledged that Vietnam will achieve net zero emissions by 2050. This is part of the national effort to address climate change and has received support from the international community.
In Vietnam, many specific projects and action programs have been and are being implemented. These projects include promoting renewable energy, improving energy efficiency and improving waste management.
Typically, the Prime Minister also issued Decision No. 876/QD-TTg on the "Action Program for green energy conversion, reducing carbon and methane emissions in the transport sector".
According to this roadmap, by 2040, Vietnam will stop producing, assembling and importing cars, motorbikes and scooters using fossil fuels. By 2050, all road motor vehicles will switch to using electricity and green energy.
To successfully implement the Net Zero goal and transition to a green economy, it is certain that the participation of the entire political system, departments, ministries, and agencies from central to local levels is needed.
In this regard, the business community also plays an extremely important role. All businesses, regardless of size or sector, have the opportunity, position, potential and promise to contribute to the current global green race for sustainable development.
High-tech production associated with environmental protection
Green development is considered a comprehensive and strategic solution. In order not to be left behind in the Net Zero game, Vietnamese businesses have quickly joined the game and taken practical actions.
Focusing on developing high-tech industrial production and green development, Geleximco Group said that the unit will operate based on environmental protection factors.
Previously, Geleximco Group focused on key industries including: Industrial production; Infrastructure - Real estate; Finance - Banking; Trade - Services. However, from 2022 to present, the Group has cooperated with many large units to aim at producing and developing new, environmentally friendly energy products.
“When we decided to convert, we were very hesitant, but with the current trend, if we do not change, we will certainly be pushed behind. In recent years, the unit has grasped the trend, focusing on developing high-tech industrial production, investing in transport infrastructure, highways, seaports, logistics, import and export,...
In particular, the green transformation goal has been and is being implemented synchronously by the unit. The investment in building an automobile manufacturing plant in Thai Binh Economic Zone (Vietnam) with an expected capacity of 200,000 vehicles/year is a project that initiates the unit's "green steps" in the coming time.
The production and assembly of new generation car models of this project must emphasize environmental factors, not affecting rice-growing areas and aquaculture areas of local people" - Mr. Vu Van Tien - Chairman of the Board of Directors of Geleximco Group shared.
A representative of Geleximco Group also informed that the production process of the new factory will be automated, combined with the use of renewable energy sources to limit negative impacts on the environment.
Harvest "sweet fruit"
Green transformation in the transportation sector, especially the development of electric vehicles, has been strongly supported by businesses. Sharing with Lao Dong, Dr. Nguyen Huu Phuoc Nguyen - founder and CEO of Selex Motors said that since he decided to start a business, he has been oriented towards sustainable development and environmental protection.
The desire to start a business and develop a company with green criteria had crept into the young man’s mind that year. However, at that time, Mr. Nguyen could not answer the question: Which field should he choose and where should he start?
“Initially, I spent a lot of time thinking about what to do to create a company that is both influential and can develop in the long term. Until one day, on the way home from work in the smoke of gasoline and traffic jams, I suddenly had the idea of a green and smart transportation future, and the first thing I thought of was electric vehicles,” Nguyen shared.
Thinking is doing, Mr. Nguyen took a week off work to stay home and research this issue and realized that electric vehicles are a rare opportunity. The electric vehicle revolution can lead to many profound changes. Most importantly, this is a sustainable transition.
“Through research, I realized that Vietnam is a country with many advantages in the motorbike sector because we are one of the countries that use motorbikes the most in the world. Therefore, switching to electric vehicles is inevitable in the future. And in just 7 days, I decided to quit my job and start a business with electric vehicles,” said Mr. Nguyen.
“In 2018, I decided to choose a startup path that was less traveled and had the most potential risks. At that time, many people thought I was wrong to pursue things that were far-fetched and unrealistic. However, I care about things that create great impact, along with sustainable development. Therefore, I always think about starting a business in a field that is good for the environment, has a high intellectual content and contributes to the quality growth of the Fatherland,” Nguyen shared.
Realizing that traditional modes of transport are carbon-emitting and have a major impact on the environment, the CEO of Selex Motors has developed an electric vehicle transport system to address current cost and environmental issues.
“At first, I encountered countless difficulties in balancing economic benefits and environmental development goals. At that time, there were not many policies to support green development companies like today, so many times we thought we could not continue due to pressures on technology, economy, infrastructure, human resources, etc.
However, after efforts and perseverance for the common goal, we have overcome initial difficulties to gradually balance the economic problem and move towards green development, developing in the direction of environmental protection" - Mr. Nguyen shared.
The CEO of Selex Motors also said that up to now, the company has launched many projects, focusing on environmental protection products.
In 2022, Selex Motors will launch the first optimal electric motorbike ecosystem serving the transportation sector in Southeast Asia. In 2024, the company will continue to implement the "shared battery swapping station" system - an initiative to facilitate electric vehicle users in general.
The dilemma of choosing between electric and gasoline vehicles is a familiar story for a large number of consumers because they have not received sustainable guarantees from businesses. Therefore, charging station projects can partly resolve consumers' concerns.
Selex Motors' battery swapping station allows for the common use of about 70% of electric scooters on the market, thereby reducing the need for individual charging stations. At the same time, it encourages people to easily switch from gasoline to electric vehicles.
“In the production process, we also apply clean, energy-saving technology, with the desire that every electric vehicle produced is environmentally friendly from the manufacturing stage to operation.
We believe that each electric vehicle and the "shared battery swapping station" system is not only a product, but also an important part of Vietnam's journey towards a green, sustainable and zero-emission future," Mr. Nguyen emphasized.
With a clear goal and steps towards environmental protection, Selex Motors has caught the attention of many partners, wishing to import the entire ecosystem and business model to develop in the Philippines. In 2024, Selex successfully exported a shipment including vehicles and battery swapping stations to the Philippines.
Thanks to its initial successes, Selex Motors has been listed in the "Forbes Asia 100 to watch" list, according to Forbes Asia magazine. Selex Motors is honored to be a company in the Manufacturing & Energy sector in Vietnam to be honored.
Companies on the list are evaluated by Forbes Asia based on indicators such as: Positive impact on the region or sector, strong revenue growth history, ability to attract investment capital, new business model, promising market...
The actions of businesses are a great commitment, contributing to helping Vietnam soon complete the goal of net zero emissions by 2050. This change not only benefits businesses but also contributes to bringing a green, clean environment to people.
