Sir, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Global Climate Report, 2024 is confirmed to be the hottest year on record. In Vietnam, how is this expressed?
- According to our statistics, in 2024, the whole country had 19 widespread hot spells. In particular, in the Southeast, the heat has lasted continuously for 70 days (from March 8 to May 16), of which the widespread heat in the South lasted for 47 days (from March 29 to May 14).
Many record values in temperature were recorded in April 2024. 110/186 monitoring stations nationwide recorded the highest temperature value of the day exceeding the historical value.
In particular, in Dong Ha (Quang Tri), the highest temperature on April 28, 2024 was measured at 44 degrees Celsius. This is the highest value since 1976 to date and the 3rd largest in the history of measurement in Vietnam.
Currently, ENSO has gradually shifted to the neutral phase, how is the forecast for hot weather in 2025, will it break the record in 2024?
- In Vietnam, the temperature is forecast to remain high in 2025 but is unlikely to break the 2024 record. However, the global temperature is on the rise due to climate change, so there is a possibility of facing severe heat in the coming time. The risk of local temperature extremes in the Northern and Central regions in the summer of 2025 cannot be ruled out.
How is the forecast for the hot weather in each area, sir?
- Hot weather is likely to start appearing in the Southern and Central Highlands around March. In April, the heat will gradually increase in the Northwest region, the mountainous areas west of the Central region.
In May and June, the hot weather will spread in the Northeast and Central coastal areas.
