Heavy rain in almost all of the country
According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, currently, the South Central and Central Highlands regions have scattered showers and thunderstorms.
According to Mr. Mai Van Khiem - Director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, from the evening of May 28 to May 29, the Northern region will have moderate rain, heavy rain and thunderstorms, locally very heavy rain with common rainfall from 40 - 100mm, locally over 200 - 250mm.
"In recent days, the Northern region, especially the mountainous provinces, has continuously experienced thunderstorms. Many places have saturated the soil, causing the risk of flash floods on small rivers and streams and landslides to increase" - Mr. Khiem said.
Mr. Khiem also specifically warned that this rain could also cause localized rain with high intensity (over 100mm in 3 hours), which would increase the risk of flash floods and landslides.

This rain is not only due to wind convergence, but also the interaction of cold air masses from the north suppressing the trough and interacting with hot and humid air masses. This conflict makes the atmospheric state more unstable, leading to the possibility of thunderstorms, tornadoes, lightning, and strong gusts of wind during the rain.
"We also pay special attention to the possibility of flooding in low-lying areas, urban areas, industrial parks in the Northern and North Central regions" - Mr. Khiem advised.
According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, in addition to the Northern region, from early morning of May 29 to early morning of May 30, the North Central region is forecast to have moderate rain, heavy rain and thunderstorms, locally very heavy rain with common rainfall of 30 - 70mm, locally over 120mm.
From the evening of May 28 to the night of May 29, the South Central, Central Highlands and Southern regions will have moderate rain, heavy rain and thunderstorms, locally very heavy rain with common rainfall of 30 - 60mm, locally over 100mm. Heavy rain will be concentrated in the afternoon and evening.
Flood risk on rivers in the North
Regarding the hydrological situation, currently, the water level on rivers in the Red - Thai Binh river system, rivers in Thanh Hoa is changing slowly and is below alert level 1.
From tonight (May 28) to May 29, on the Thao River, the Lo River, and small rivers in the Northern region and Thanh Hoa, there is a possibility of a flood, with a flood amplitude on the rivers of about 2 - 5m.
During this flood, flood peaks on small rivers and upstream rivers are likely to rise to alert level 1 and above alert level 1. The downstream water level of major rivers is still below alert level 1.
There is a high risk of flooding in low-lying areas along rivers, flash floods and landslides on steep slopes in the mountainous areas of the North and Thanh Hoa. The warning level of natural disaster risk due to floods is level 1.
Floods on rivers and streams can cause flooding in low-lying areas along rivers, affecting activities such as waterway transportation, aquaculture, agricultural production, people's livelihood and socio-economic activities.
Real-time warning information for areas at risk of flash floods and landslides is provided online on the website of the Department of Hydrometeorology at: https://luquetsatlo.nchmf.gov.vn and in a separate bulletin warning of flash floods and landslides.
