Da Nang mural street is deserted, people look forward to upgrading

Da Nang - Once expected to be an attractive tourist highlight, the mural street in Son Tra ward is currently in a desolate state.

Mural street in Son Tra ward, Da Nang city recreates the beauty of culture and daily life of coastal fishing villagers. The initial goal is to turn this place into an outdoor art space, attracting tourists to visit and take photos, thereby promoting community tourism and improving people's lives.

However, after about 2-3 years of operation, the actual picture is not as bright as the strokes on the walls. In this area, the number of tourists visiting is quite sparse, not bringing the expected economic efficiency.

Mr. Tran Van Nua, a resident living in Son Tra ward, said: "Although the mural street has been implemented for about 2-3 years, the number of tourists visiting this area is still very modest. Most visitors from all directions only come during festivals and cultural and religious events of the locality to visit and take souvenir photos due to curiosity about the new space.

Not only are there few customers, but the issue of attracting tourists to stay and spend is also a difficult problem. According to Mr. Pham Van Thien, another resident in Son Tra ward, most tourists only "stop to admire the scenery for a moment and then leave, almost no need to shop or use on-site services arises".

Moreover, according to people's reflections, the mural street project phase 2 was once planned with a budget of about 10 billion VND. However, so far only a section of Kiet 56 Vo Nguyen Giap street has been paved with asphalt, most of the road is still an old concrete road. More worryingly, many murals have begun to fade, while environmental sanitation in the area has not been ensured, causing unsightliness and affecting the experience of a few tourists who regularly come here.

Mr. Pham Van Thien commented: "Infrastructure here needs to be invested in and expanded soon, especially the road surface and drainage system to thoroughly overcome the situation of stagnation when it rains heavily. Along with that, murals that are showing signs of peeling need to have more regular and professional maintenance and preservation plans.

Faced with this situation, people in Son Tra ward have proposed that the Ward People's Committee continue to implement the project, pay attention to cleaning up the environment and propose to the city to continue investing, in order to create real attraction for this cultural project.

According to Son Tra Ward People's Committee, the upgrading of infrastructure, specifically asphalt pavement for the remaining section of Kiet 56 Vo Nguyen Giap, the Project Management Board for Construction Investment of Son Tra Ward has updated this street into the investment portfolio of the project "Upgrading and renovating road surfaces and drainage ditches on alleys and alleys in the ward". Currently, the project is in the investment preparation phase and is expected to be implemented in the 2026-2028 period.

Regarding the mural road project phase 2, Son Tra Ward People's Committee informed that this project belongs to the medium-term public investment list for the 2026-2030 period. The Ward Construction Investment Project Management Board will coordinate with the Department of Culture - Society and the Department of Economy, Infrastructure and Urban to conduct an overall assessment of investment efficiency. The goal of this assessment is to make the most appropriate investment proposals, ensuring practicality, avoiding the situation of spreading investment, wasting budget but not bringing about the expected efficiency.
