It is forecasted that New Year's Eve will have initial effects of cold air on the mainland of the northern provinces of our country, causing rain and fog in some places. In the Central and Southern regions, the weather on New Year's Eve is relatively stable, convenient for people to have fun and move" - Mr. Hoa said.
Around January 1, 2026, this cold air mass will affect the Northeast region, then affect the North Central region, the Northwest region, the Central Central region and some places in the South Central region. On land, the wind will shift northeast strongly at level 3, coastal areas at level 4 - 5, with gusts at level 6 in some places.
From the night of December 31, 2025 to January 1, 2026, the Northeast region will have rain, scattered showers and thunderstorms in some places. On the day and night of January 1, 2026, the Northwest region, Thanh Hoa and Nghe An will have rain, scattered showers and thunderstorms in some places. In thunderstorms, there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind.
The mountainous area in the Northeast region, from January 1, 2026, will turn cold.
The midlands, the Northern Delta and the North Central region will turn cold from the evening and night of January 1, 2026.
From January 2 - 3, 2026, the mountainous and midland areas of the North will be very cold, with severe cold in some places. The lowest temperature in this cold air wave in the North is commonly 11 - 14 degrees C, the mountainous and midland areas of the North are 8 - 11 degrees C, the high mountainous areas are in some places below 7 degrees C; North Central region is commonly 13 - 16 degrees C.
Hanoi area on the night of December 31, 2025 and January 1, 2026 will have rain, showers; from the evening and night of January 1, 2026, it will turn cold. The lowest temperature in this cold air wave is commonly 12 - 14 degrees C.
The area from Ha Tinh to Da Nang city, the eastern provinces from Quang Ngai to Dak Lak and Khanh Hoa from near dawn on January 2 - 3, 2026, is forecast to have rain, showers, locally moderate rain, heavy rain and thunderstorms due to the influence of cold air. In thunderstorms, there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning, stone rain and strong gusts of wind.
Severe cold and harmful cold weather is likely to affect livestock and poultry, affecting the growth and development of crops. Localized heavy rains are likely to cause flooding in low-lying areas; flash floods on small rivers and streams; landslides on slopes; heavy rain in a short time causes flooding in urban areas and industrial parks.
At sea, on January 1, 2026, in the Gulf of Tonkin, the wind will turn northeast strongly at level 4-5; from the evening and night of January 1, 2026, it will gradually strengthen to level 6, sometimes level 7, gusting to level 8-9, strong sea waves, waves 2-3 m high.
Northern East Sea area (including Hoang Sa special zone) strong northeast wind level 7, gusts level 8 - 9, strong sea waves, waves 4 - 6 m high.
The central area of the East Sea, the sea area from Khanh Hoa to Ca Mau and the western sea area of the South East Sea (including the western sea area of the Truong Sa special zone) will gradually strengthen northeast winds to level 6, sometimes level 7, gusts level 8 - 9, strong sea waves, waves 2-5 m high.
From the night of January 1st, the sea area from South Quang Tri to Dak Lak and the sea area east of the South East Sea (including the sea area east of Truong Sa region) will gradually strengthen northeast winds to level 6, gusts level 7 - 8, rough seas, waves 2 - 4 m high.
