300m long crack, risk of further spreading
On the evening of September 19, Mr. Doan Van Phuong - Chairman of Quang Son Commune People's Committee (Lam Dong) said that the situation of land subsidence and cracking in Dak Snao village is developing complicatedly, directly affecting 78 households with about 450 people.
According to a quick report from the Civil Defense Command of Quang Son commune, the ridge cracking phenomenon appeared after a period of prolonged heavy rain from August 31st to September 14th.
By September 17th, the affected area is about 4ha wide, with an average subsidence depth of about 20cm.
The cracks stretch about 300m along the hillside and residential areas, 6-17cm wide and tend to continue to expand.
No casualties have been recorded yet. However, subsidence has affected people's houses and production land.
At the houses of three households, Mr. Dam Van Chien, Mr. Thao A Pao and Mr. Cha A Tinh, cracks appeared between the floor and walls.
The wall was moved, affecting the structure of the project; a water tank was also knocked down.
About 4ha of crops including coffee, pepper and crops are located in the affected area.
Local authorities warn that if the weather continues to rain heavily, the risk of house collapses and widespread landslides may occur.
Mobilizing forces to relocate people
Faced with the above situation, the Civil Defense Command of Quang Son commune coordinated with forces, including the Quang Son Economic - National Defense Delegation, to approach the scene and support people to move people and property to safe places.
Local people also mobilized about 500 working days to build temporary houses with an area of about 3,000m2 to serve the evacuation of the elderly and children.
Functional forces have stretched ropes and barricades throughout the cracked area, planted warning signs of danger and arranged officers and militia to be on duty 24/24 hours to monitor developments.
The commune government also announced on the loudspeaker system, requesting people to raise their vigilance and not return to their old houses when it is still raining.
Because the subsidence and cracking area has a complex terrain, exceeding the technical handling capacity of the commune level, the locality proposed to higher levels to assign geological experts to survey and assess the stability of the soil foundation.
Quang Son commune also proposed to support materials, overtime funds and consider long-term resettlement plans for households who have to relocate from dangerous areas.
Currently, all 78 households have been relocated to safe places, ensuring living conditions. The locality also arranged forces to be on duty in the landslide area to promptly handle incidents when they occur" - Mr. Doan Van Phuong, Chairman of Quang Son Commune People's Committee, said.
