Reduced cold air in summer due to climate change
According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, currently, in the North, there is a cold air mass moving towards our country. Around the evening and night of June 8, this cold air mass will affect our country.
Meanwhile, in recent days, the North and Central regions are recording a widespread heat wave. Information about the appearance of cold air in June - one of the hottest months - surprised many people.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Huong - Head of Weather Forecast Department, National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, according to meteorological observation history, the beginning of June has entered summer but there is still cold air affecting our country, which is not unprecedented.
Statistics from 1979 to 2025 (47 years) show that in June there were 25 cold spells, averaging 0.53 spells/year; while from 1991 to now (35 years), the number of cold spells has decreased significantly, with only 7 spells appearing in June, averaging 0.2 spells/year. Notably, from 2014 to 2025 (12 years), no cold spells appeared in June.
Thus, it can be seen that according to climate change, the Earth's temperature warms up, and the appearance of cold air waves affecting our country in June is also less likely" - Mr. Huong assessed.
Risk of extreme rain after heat waves
Regarding the diễn biến of the cold air wave, according to a representative of the Weather Forecasting Department, it is forecast that around the evening of June 8, this cold air mass will affect the northern mountainous area of the Northern region, then affect other places in the Northeast region, some places in the Northwest region and North Central region. On land, the wind will turn northeast at level 2-3, coastal areas at level 3.
Due to the influence of cold air combined with 5,000m high wind convergence, from the evening of June 8 to June 9, a widespread period of moderate to heavy rain will appear in the North; in which the Northwest region, the north of Phu Tho and Tuyen Quang will have heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorms with common rainfall of 80-160mm, locally over 250mm.
Thanh Hoa and Nghe An have moderate rain, heavy rain and thunderstorms with common rainfall of 50-100mm, locally very heavy rain over 150mm.
From the evening of June 8 to the morning of June 9, other parts of the Northern region will have moderate rain, heavy rain and thunderstorms with common rainfall of 20-50mm, locally very heavy rain over 100mm.
Warning of the risk of heavy rain with rainfall greater than 100mm within 3 hours.
In thunderstorms, it is necessary to pay close attention to tornadoes, whirlwinds, hail and strong gusts of wind, in the northwestern provinces, the north of Phu Tho and Tuyen Quang, it is necessary to be wary of flash floods and landslides" - Mr. Huong advised.
Warning, thunderstorms accompanied by dangerous phenomena can affect agricultural production, causing trees to fall, damage to houses, traffic works, and infrastructure. Heavy rain is likely to cause flash floods on small rivers and streams, landslides on slopes, and flooding in low-lying areas.
The meteorological agency forecasts that due to the influence of cold air and rain in the Northeast region and Thanh Hoa, the temperature tomorrow (June 9) will decrease from 5 - 7 degrees Celsius, the highest temperature during the day will be below 31 degrees Celsius; from the night of June 8, the weather will cool down. The lowest temperature in this cold air wave in the Northeast region and Thanh Hoa is commonly from 22 - 25 degrees Celsius, the Northern mountainous region has places below 21 degrees Celsius.
In addition to causing heavy rain on land, due to the influence of cold air from the night of June 8, in the Northern Gulf of Tonkin, the wind turned Northeast with strong winds of level 4 - 5, sometimes level 6, gusts of level 7, sea waves 1.5 - 2.5m high, rough seas. Strong winds and gusts of wind, large waves at sea are likely to affect the operation of ships and other activities.
