New tropical depression appears with gusts of level 8, latest forecast path

This morning (August 7), the low pressure area over the Gulf of Tonkin strengthened into a tropical depression.

Updated from the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, at 9:00 AM, the center of the tropical depression was located at about 19.8 degrees North latitude - 108.1 degrees East longitude, over the Gulf of Tonkin area, over the sea area southeast of Bach Long Vi special zone. The strongest wind near the center of the tropical depression is strong at level 6 (39 - 49 km/h), gusting at level 8.

According to Mr. Mai Van Khiem - Director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, it is forecasted that in the next 24 hours, due to the influence of strong West and Southwest winds dominating the East Sea area, this tropical depression will move in the East and Southeast directions, going out towards Hainan Island area (China). The speed of the tropical depression is moving slowly at about 5 km/h.

This tropical depression is unlikely to strengthen into a storm, and is unlikely to enter the mainland of our country. The main impact is strong winds, thunderstorms, and tornadoes in the Gulf of Tonkin" - Mr. Khiem said.

By 9:00 AM on August 8, the center of the tropical depression will be located at about 19.5 degrees North latitude - 109.5 degrees East longitude; in the area north of Hainan Island (China). Wind intensity is strong at level 6, gusting at level 8.

The dangerous area is in the range from 18.5 to 20.1 degrees North latitude; from longitude 107 to 110 degrees East longitude. Disaster risk level is level 3 for the Gulf of Tonkin area.

Forecast for the next 48 hours, the tropical depression will continue to move in the East-Southeast direction, at a speed of about 5 km/h. The intensity gradually weakens into a low pressure area with winds below level 6.

By 9:00 AM on August 9th, the center of the low pressure area will be located at about 19.3 degrees North latitude - 111.1 degrees East longitude, over the sea east of Hainan Island (China).

Regarding the impact of the tropical depression, the Gulf of Tonkin area has strong winds of level 6, gusts of level 8; sea waves are 2-3m high, rough seas.

Ships operating in the above-mentioned dangerous areas are likely to be affected by thunderstorms, tornadoes, strong winds, and large waves.

Previously, storm No. 3 with the international name Kujira formed from a tropical depression in the southeast sea area of the Northern East Sea on the night of August 4, early morning of August 5. On the night of August 5, the storm left the East Sea.

In the weather forecast bulletin for August 2026, the possibility of storms/tropical depressions operating in the East Sea area and directly affecting Vietnam's mainland is lower than the multi-year average. The multi-year average in August in the East Sea area is 2.4 storms and making landfall in Vietnam is 0.8 storms.

In July 2026, there were 2 storms in the East Sea area. Among them, storm No. 1 (international name Maysak) entered the Mong Cai area (Quang Ninh); storm No. 2 (international name Noul) made landfall in the southern mainland of Guangdong province (China).

The meteorological agency recommends that in the context of climate change, weather, and climate are increasingly complicated with many dangerous and extreme forms.
