This house's kitchen is flooded, another house lights a fire to cook rice to provide supplies.
Two days ago, due to the impact of storm Tra Mi (storm No. 6), in Vinh Linh district (Quang Tri province), there was heavy rain, rising flood waters, causing many households in Vinh Long and Vinh Lam communes of this district to be isolated. Up to this point, the water is gradually receding, but in Vinh Long commune alone, about 600 households are still flooded.
The flood water is deep, making it difficult for households to live and eat, so other localities in Vinh Linh district have supported by cooking meals and giving them to people in flooded areas.
Early in the morning of October 29, people gathered at Giang Son restaurant (Cua Tung town, Vinh Linh district, Quang Tri province). Some brought rice, some brought food, some contributed money to buy ingredients to prepare dishes. About 3 hours later, 15 people had finished cooking 300 servings of rice with braised meat, eggs, vegetables, and soup.
Ms. Do Thi Nhat (living in Vinh Giang commune, Vinh Linh district) said that during the flood, many families could not cook anything, life was difficult. Therefore, she volunteered to join her local brothers and sisters to cook hot meals for people in the flooded areas.
"I am very happy to contribute my efforts to support people" - Ms. Nhat said.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Tuyet - President of the Women's Union of Vinh Linh district said that, in the face of the flood situation affecting many households, the Women's Union of Vinh Linh district was assigned to be the focal point for receiving and distributing food and food support for people in flooded areas.
Many units in Vinh Linh district registered to support meals for flood areas. To avoid waste, the Women's Union of Vinh Linh district has scheduled specific meals for each unit and each session.
Sailing on flooded fields is more difficult than going to sea
Upon hearing the news that Vinh Long and Vinh Lam communes... were flooded with hundreds of households isolated, the People's Committee of Vinh Thai commune (Vinh Linh district) immediately held a meeting.
After that, the commune decided to send 2 boats and forces to support the flooded area. Each boat will have 1 main fisherman, 1 assistant fisherman, 1 commune police officer, and 1 frontline officer. Captain Hoang Ngoc Minh - Chief of Vinh Thai Commune Police was assigned by Vinh Thai Commune People's Committee to be the leader of the above relief team.
At 6:30 a.m. on October 28, two boats were brought to Vinh Long commune, and were assigned by the local authorities to deliver goods to two isolated and deeply flooded villages, Gia Lam and Phuc Lam.
On October 28, each boat made four rounds to supply food and water to people in two villages. Captain Hoang Ngoc Minh said that the two boat owners, Nguyen Quang Hoa and Nguyen Van Truong, were good at sea, but when sailing on flooded fields, they encountered many difficulties.
“The boat sails at sea without obstacles, now it runs on flooded fields, sometimes running up village roads, getting stuck in milestones, getting caught in people’s traps and getting caught in the rudder. Despite many difficulties, we all overcame them, trying to transport people and goods to the flooded areas in time” – Captain Hoang Ngoc Minh informed.
Thanks to the volunteer boats mentioned above, hot meals, bottles of water, and instant noodle packages sent to flooded areas are delivered to the people.
“In the spirit of volunteering, we will try to support people in flood-hit areas until the water recedes,” Captain Hoang Minh added.
