According to Dr. Ridhima Khamsera - a certified clinical nutritionist in India, calcium is an ingredient that makes bones and teeth strong. Calcium needs a group of supporting nutrients such as vitamin D, magnesium and phosphorus for the body to absorb and use effectively.
Almond milk or cows milk are both a strong nutrient and the choice of product will depend on nutritional needs, personal preferences and health factors of each person, says Dr. Ridhima Khamsera, pointing out the pros and cons of choosing between almond milk and animal milk.
Advantages of almond milk
Lactose-free: Almond milk is an ideal choice for people with lactose intolerance or allergies to animal milk.
Plant nutrition: Almond milk is plant-based, rich in fiber and contains no cholesterol, which is good for heart health.
Low in calories: Almond milk (especially unsweetened) has much fewer calories than cow's milk, helping to support a weight loss diet.
Contains healthy fats: Almond milk provides unsaturated fats, which help improve bad cholesterol (LDL) levels in the body.
Contains vitamin E: Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that helps protect cells from damage and supports skin health.
Disadvantages of almond milk
Protein deficiency: Almond milk has very little protein compared to animal milk, which can be an important factor for people who need a high amount of protein (for example: bodybuilders).
Lack of certain vitamins and minerals: Although commercial almond milk can be supplemented with vitamins and minerals (such as vitamin D and calcium), if these are not supplemented, it may lack some of the important nutrients that animal milk provides.
Contains added sugar: Some commercial almond milk may contain a lot of added sugar, which may reduce its health benefits.
Advantages of animal milk
Provides complete protein: animal milk contains complete protein with all the essential amino acids, which are important for muscle growth and recovery.
Contains natural vitamins and minerals: animal milk provides calcium, vitamin D, vitamin B12 and other minerals that are important for bone, tooth and nerve health.
Nutritious: animal milk contains fat, protein, vitamins and natural minerals that provide stable energy and support many body functions.
Disadvantages of animal milk
Contains lactose: Many people cannot digest lactose in animal milk, causing discomfort such as bloating, abdominal pain or diarrhea.
Contains cholesterol and saturated fat: animal milk may contain a lot of cholesterol and saturated fat, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease if consumed in excess.
Milk allergy: Some people may be allergic to the protein in animal milk, leading to allergic reactions such as rashes and shortness of breath.
