According to a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper on the afternoon of January 6, on the road connecting Cach Mang Thang 8 and Provincial Road 918 with a total investment of more than 500 billion VND, in Binh Thuy District, Can Tho City - there are many types of garbage mixed together and gathered in many places.Observing at Rach Suc bridge (Binh Thuy district), on the road and sidewalk, garbage is piled up in large and scattered piles; under the sewer, garbage is also dense, mainly consisting of styrofoam boxes, styrofoam food containers, plastic bags, etc.As a resident of Binh Thuy district, Mr. Nguyen Van Nam (name changed) shared that the fact that many garbage dumps are located right at the gateway to the city is unsightly. Moreover, this route has a high traffic volume, so vehicles occupying the road to collect and transfer garbage like this can easily cause traffic accidents.Mr. Nam said that the road is very beautiful, but the image of piles of garbage all over the road and sidewalks is not beautiful, and over time it will become a habit that is difficult for people to break. According to Mr. Nam, the government needs to have a solution to fix this so that these piles of garbage no longer exist.Garbage dumps are formed, from which people also "conveniently" throw away without putting them in the trash or in the right place.Right at the roundabout of Vo Van Kiet Street, garbage is also gathered and burned. Previously, this was the place where garbage was transferred from small trucks to large trucks.Construction waste is also piled up in the section from the roundabout of Vo Van Kiet Street to Nguyen Van Linh Street.On this route there are also garbage collection points both on vehicles and on the ground, causing leachate to flow into the environment.
According to the Law on Environmental Protection 2020 and Decree 45/2022 effective from January 1, 2025, people must classify waste at source into groups: reusable, recyclable waste; food waste; other household waste. Failure to comply will result in a fine of VND 500,000 - VND 1,000,000.
Previously, Permanent Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee Duong Tan Hien signed a decision to promulgate regulations on the management of domestic solid waste; plastic waste; routes and transportation time of domestic solid waste, common industrial solid waste, and hazardous waste. This decision takes effect from January 6, 2025.
On January 7, continuing the 41st Session, the National Assembly Standing Committee gave opinions on the National Assembly's thematic supervision outline on: "Implementation of policies and laws on environmental protection since the Law on Environmental Protection 2020 took effect".
According to the draft Monitoring Plan and the Report Outlines of the Monitoring Team, the plan identifies the organization of 4 direct monitoring working groups in 15 localities, including Can Tho City. The monitoring period in the localities is expected to be from the end of June to before July 31, 2025.
