Ngo boat racing is a traditional sport associated with the cultural and spiritual life of the Khmer people in the Mekong Delta. In addition to large-scale tournaments, the mini ngo boat racing is a unique playground, attracting the participation of many young people.Mr. Tang Thanh Hoai, a famous mini ngo boat racer in Tan Hung commune (Long Phu district, Soc Trang province), shared: "If the traditional ngo boat race needs up to 60 athletes, then the mini ngo boat race only requires boat owners to participate. The decisive factor for the victory or loss lies in the manufacturing technique and operation principles of the boat."The operating principle of the mini ngo boat is simple but creative. With just a few fishing lines, one end fixed at the boat's tip, the other end connected to the rotary shaft with two girder roofs on both sides of the body, the pull of the fishing lines will create movement, pushing the boat forward. A small steering wheel attached to the rear of the boat helps keep the boat going straight and stably.Mr. Kim Hung, a mini ngo boat manufacturer in Chau Thanh district (Soc Trang province), said: "Traditional ngo boats are tens of meters long and weigh more than 2 tons, while mini ngo boats are only 1-2 meters long." Ghe is usually made from light, easily able to float wooden bowls. The core is carved into a boat body, then meticulously decorated with patterns and vivid colors, simulating real ngo boats. "From the preferences and admiration for each boat team, I will paint detailed symbolic patterns of that team for customers. Each boat costs from a few hundred thousand to a million VND, Mr. Hung added."In addition to making boats, factors such as wind and water flow also determine the speed and direction of the boat. Sometimes the wind too much causes the boat to lose control or overturn," said Mr. Tang Thanh Hien - a person who has many years of working and participating in the mini ngo boat race. The race venue is usually a pond or a large ditch. The race track is divided into two lanes, separated by ropes, with clear starting and finishing points. Depending on the regulations of the organizing committee, the track is 15m to 20m long. Right after the whistle, the young "captains" release their beams, the boat bounces forward and anxiously awaits which boat will finish first.Although it is just a folk game, the Ngo mini boat racing still receives enthusiastic support from adults, creating conditions for children to play and compete. Mr. Dinh Lam Phuoc Quy, a regular organizer of the mini boat racing in Tan Hung commune (Long Phu district, Soc Trang), said that the tournament is held to celebrate festivals and create opportunities for children to rub shoulders and learn from experience to compete better. This year's tournament attracted nearly 30 boats and was enthusiastically watched by many people.Mr. Tang Thanh Hien in Tan Hung commune (Long Phu district, Soc Trang province) shared that mini boat racing opportunities are also an opportunity for him and many other races to learn from the experience of making mini boats: "I look at your team's boat and I am ready to help wherever I learn from it, and if your team has any problems".Running mini ngo boats is not only an entertainment game, but also a meaningful cultural activity, contributing to preserving and promoting the traditional identity of the Khmer people. Through this playground, the younger generation has access to the cultural heritage of the nation, nurturing passion and a sense of responsibility in preserving the good values of the community.
