Training AI human resources requires quality over quantity

Human resources in the artificial intelligence (AI) industry with international qualifications is a huge challenge for Vietnam today, which needs to be acknowledged in order to come up with effective solutions.

DeepSeek's AI model shocked the world when it was first introduced, but just days later, the American tech giant OpenAI released its Deep Research feature. This is a tool that helps ChatGPT synthesize and research information in a few dozen minutes instead of days for a person.

OpenAI’s move shows that the corporation has a high-tech product in hand, the problem is to release it when necessary, at the right time. Deep Research was announced after DeepSeek created an “earthquake” that shook Silicon Valley.

American and Chinese technology corporations create world-changing products because they have super brains and scientists who can carry out world-class technology projects. That excellent science and technology team is thanks to a long-term training strategy, from decades ago, not overnight.

It should be noted that only excellent engineers, experts, and scientists can create valuable products in the field of AI, "quality is more important than quantity".

Therefore, Vietnamese universities that are training in AI need to focus on quality. Opening a major to attract a large number of students, but whether the professional qualifications meet the needs of employers is another matter. For investors in technology projects, a university degree is not a ticket to enter their home, but a test of practical skills in the workplace.

To train qualified AI human resources that can meet the requirements of international high-tech projects, the basic condition is the teaching staff. Currently, the AI teaching staff is still lacking and not "sophisticated", so it is difficult to demand high-quality "output".

To fill this gap, three things must be done at once.

First of all, we invite Vietnamese scientists from abroad to teach. Recently, many PhDs who graduated from prestigious universities in the US have returned to Vietnam, such as Dr. Can Tran Thanh Trung - California Institute of Technology (USA), Dr. Tran Minh Tuan - University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA); Dr. Le Trung Hoang - School of Computing and Information Systems (Singapore); Dr. Le Van Ve - Korea University of Science and Technology to work at Ho Chi Minh City University of Science.

The second is to provide scholarships for excellent students to study abroad at the world's leading universities training AI engineers. The third is to invite talented Vietnamese and foreign engineers and experts to work in Vietnam.
