Many opinions say that without strict disciplinary measures, schools will gradually lose discipline, education will also reduce its role as a guiding and correcting behavior.
In essence, education is a process of accompanying students to maturity, not just to impart knowledge.
However, to educate effectively, we cannot rely solely on advice, reminders or reviews.
In particular, middle and high school students with a still immature mentality, easily lured, sometimes cannot distinguish between bad behavior and serious violations. Therefore, discipline is a necessary tool for children to be aware of their limitations.
Of course, school suspension has never been an ideal form, and is not the only solution. But in reality, it is still the "final line" that schools can use to handle dangerous behavior such as school violence, insulting teachers, destroying public property...
Completely abolishing this form without strict enough sanctions to replace it is no different from making teachers enter class with the mindset of being " bound up", seeing students wrong but not having the tools to handle it effectively.
Some opinions are concerned that school suspension is heavy and no longer necessary for the trend of modern education. But in reality, the problem does not lie in the nature of this form, but in the way it is implemented.
school suspension should not be understood as pushing students out of school gates, but as creating a necessary space for students to reflect and understand that wrongdoings have consequences.
If applied for a short time (2 - 3 days), combined with measures such as requiring harvested lessons, online learning at home, and coordinating with parents to supervise, this is still a form of educational discipline, not punishment.
It should also be added that it is not possible to expect all students to be self-conscious and know how to adjust themselves after a few criticisms or reviews. In reality, many students have re-offended because the handling is too light and easily disregarded.
The less serious educational environment will gradually lose exemplary character, causing students to no longer value the line between right and wrong.
Of course, discipline also needs to be personalized according to age, education level and circumstances. For grade 12 students who are in a stressful exam preparation period, they can apply more flexibility, such as banning them from participating in extracurricular activities, writing in-depth notes...
However, for students from grades 6 to 11, when their behavior is not yet stable, temporary suspension should still be kept, as a necessary and controlled corrective measure.
Education is not about eliminating mistakes but helping students face and correct mistakes. But for students to truly mature, sometimes they need to know that there are limits that cannot be overcome.
Strict discipline, if at the right time and at the right level, will be a good foundation for personality formation in the future.
