“Students, please go to your study corner and study. Parents are requested to stop noisy activities to create a quiet space, helping children concentrate on studying…”
This is the sound - almost a command - broadcast through the "ward loudspeaker" system at 7:00 p.m. from Monday to Friday every week in Vinh Hung commune, Phu Loc district, Thua Thien Hue province to create a quiet space, helping students concentrate on studying most effectively.
The "Drum of Study" model will be applied in Vinh Hung commune from the 2024-2025 school year, making it the first locality in Thua Thien Hue to implement this movement.
According to Mr. Nguyen Quang Huy - Chairman of Vinh Hung Commune People's Committee, after only a few months of implementation, the model has brought about clear results. Since 7pm, the commune has no more karaoke singing or noisy activities. Students have gradually become disciplined, voluntarily studying on time, and parents have also paid more attention to their children's studies.
This movement originated in Phu Chau commune, Ba Vi district, Hanoi in 2016, from the initiative of teacher Nguyen Van Nghiep - Principal of Phu Chau Secondary School.
After that, it quickly spread to many localities in the district, reaching Tan Son district of Phu Tho province and has been maintained for many years. Up to now, “The Drum of Studying Lessons” has traveled hundreds of kilometers to a coastal locality of Thua Thien Hue, continuing to prove its practical value.
This is a very good movement, an effective solution to deal with one of the noise problems, especially karaoke sound emitted from "candy speakers" that have been spreading from urban to rural areas.
The "candy speakers" that can sing from morning, noon, afternoon, evening, late at night and regardless of the day are a terrible obsession and torture for people, especially students and sick people who need quiet to rest and study.
The "study drum" is both a reminder for students to study and prepare their books for school tomorrow, a reminder for parents to pay more attention to their children's studies, and a demonstration of a community's awareness and cultural level in behavior.
Therefore, in addition to being a “remedy” against noise pollution, “The Study Drum” is also a good method, demonstrating uniformity in managing students’ study hours as well as effective coordination between family - school and society in the development of education, for the future of our children.
What is reasonable will last long. From Ba Vi, Hanoi, “The drum of studying” has come to Hue and proven its practical benefits. This “drum” is a civilized and humane way of life, which needs to be considered and widely replicated by the education sector and local authorities across the country to bring common benefits to the community!
