Ho Chi Minh City residents have been waiting for metro line 2 for a long time, but they only listen to the station and read the newspaper, unfortunately they are all missed reports. People do not have much expectation for the completion time of Metro Line 2 project.
Metro No. 2 project was first approved in October 2010 with a total investment of more than VND 26,000 billion. By 2019, the total investment capital was adjusted to more than VND47,800 billion (about 2.09 billion USD at that time).
But since then, many plans to start Metro Line 2 have failed.
Previously, Metro Line 1 (Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien) with a length of nearly 20km started construction in August 2012, expected to be completed and put into operation in 2018, but will not be operational until the end of 2024. Thus, it will take 12 years from the time the project is started to the finish line.
The unfortunate information that has happened shows that the implementation of Metro Line 2 project requires new breakthroughs to prevent the old story from repeating itself.
The challenging problem for the Ho Chi Minh City government is that Metro Line 2 must be completed within 5 years.
This is also the basis for people to believe in the goal of completing 355km of metro by 2035.
Metro No. 2 is over 11km long, if it reaches the finish line on time, it will only account for a very small part of Ho Chi Minh City's metro system construction plan.
After Metro Line 1 was put into operation, people saw the benefits of using modern means of transport, so they are looking forward to having many other metro lines.
The completion of Metro Line 2 project is to meet the people's expectations, and affirms that from now on, the city government has promised to do it.
Reiterate, speaking at the group discussion within the framework of the 1st Ho Chi Minh City Party Congress, held on October 14, Chairman of the City People's Committee Nguyen Van Duoc pledged that when the belt, expressway and metro network is completed, Ho Chi Minh City will basically have no traffic jams by 2035.
Metro No. 2 project is a route in the expressway network of Ho Chi Minh City. If not completed on schedule, it will not ensure the commitment of Chairman Nguyen Van Duoc to reduce traffic congestion.
Metro No. 2 with 11km not completed on schedule, it is difficult to say that 355km will be completed in the next 10 years.
