Here are some reasons why you should not eat oats every day, shared by nutritionist Deepika Jayaswal (India).
Gluten sensitivity
According to research published in the Journal of Nutrients, existing commercial oats are not suitable for a gluten-free diet for people with celiac disease due to the risk of cross-contamination. Although oats are gluten-free, they are often processed at facilities that also process wheat, barley or black barley, leading to cross-contamination.
Bloating, flatulence
One of the disadvantages of eating oats every day is related to the fiber content in this food. Fiber helps improve digestion, but consuming too much can cause bloating and flatulence. Gradually increasing your fiber intake will help your body adapt better and reduce this discomfort.
Barrier to mineral absorption
Oatmeal contains phytic acid, a substance that can interfere with the absorption of certain minerals such as calcium, iron and zinc. However, there are still remedies such as soaking or fermenting oats before processing that can significantly reduce the phytic acid content in them.
Weight gain
Although oats are rich in nutrients, they are also high in calories. Therefore, another disadvantage of eating oats every day is the risk of weight gain, especially if you do not control your portion sizes. When it comes to managing your calorie intake, you should pay attention to your portion sizes and avoid eating oats too often.
Nutritional deficiencies
Although oats provide many nutrients, to ensure the body receives enough of the necessary nutrients every day, you should maintain a varied diet. Relying solely on oats for breakfast can cause nutritional deficiencies.
