Below are ways to prevent altitude sickness shared by pulmonologist Dr. Jayalakshmi TK (India).
1. Adapt
As per the health advisory issued by the Ladakh Union Territory Administration, visitors are required to undergo at least 48 hours of acclimatization before travelling to high altitude areas. Proper acclimatization involves gradually increasing the altitude and allowing the body to adjust to reduced oxygen levels.
2. Drink enough water
Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids such as water or fruit juice. But avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks as they can make dehydration worse.
3. Avoid overexertion
Do not exert yourself or push yourself during the first 24 to 48 hours at high altitude. Rest and non-exertion will reduce the risk of altitude sickness.
4. Choose a lower altitude to sleep
Travel to high altitudes during the day, but return to lower altitudes to sleep, recommends the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
5. Take medicine
Preventive medications such as acetazolamide are prescribed to help prevent altitude sickness. But they should only be used after consulting a doctor.
