Limiting alcohol, maintaining a balanced diet, exercising regularly... are important measures to help reduce the risk of liver damage.

Limit alcohol and beer

Alcohol can damage liver cells, increasing the risk of fatty liver, hepatitis, cirrhosis and liver cancer. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the use of alcoholic beverages is associated with many diseases, including liver disease.

People with alcohol-related liver disease, especially alcoholic hepatitis or cirrhosis, should stop drinking alcohol and follow their doctor's treatment instructions. Continuing to use alcoholic beverages can worsen liver damage.

For people who have not had liver disease, minimizing alcohol consumption is still a necessary measure to reduce the metabolic burden on the liver and prevent diseases related to alcoholic beverages.

Building a balanced diet

Daily diet directly affects weight, blood sugar, blood fat and the amount of fat accumulated in the liver.

Everyone should prioritize green vegetables, whole fruits, whole grains, beans, fish, lean meat and unsaturated fat sources. At the same time, it is necessary to control the diet, limit foods high in added sugar, saturated fat, salt and energy.

Sugary drinks, fast food, fried foods and processed products, if used regularly, can increase the risk of overweight, obesity and metabolic disorders. These are all factors closely related to fatty liver disease.

Exercise regularly

Physical activity helps control weight, improve insulin sensitivity, reduce body fat and support limiting fat accumulation in the liver. Even if weight has not decreased significantly, regular exercise can still bring benefits to people with fatty liver disease.

The forms of exercise you can choose include brisk walking, cycling, swimming or exercise suitable for your physical condition.

People with liver, cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, or other chronic diseases should talk to their doctor before starting a high-intensity exercise program.

Maintain a reasonable weight

Overweight and obesity are factors related to fatty liver disease related to metabolic disorders.

The weight loss process needs to be carried out gradually through a balanced diet and regular exercise. Losing weight too quickly, fasting for a long time or applying a malnourished diet can have adverse effects on health and make liver disease more complicated.

Weight goals should be individualized according to physical condition, underlying diseases and instructions from medical staff, instead of running after rapid weight loss methods.

Hand washing and ensuring food safety

Hepatitis A and hepatitis E can be transmitted through the digestive tract when people use food or water sources contaminated with viruses.

Washing your hands thoroughly with soap and clean water after going to the toilet, after changing diapers, before cooking and before eating is an important measure to help prevent the disease.

During processing, raw foods need to be separated from cooked foods; food after processing must be properly preserved.

The above measures contribute to protecting liver health but do not replace examination and treatment. People with jaundice, yellow eyes, dark urine, prolonged pain in the right hypochondrium, rapid abdominal enlargement, leg edema or prolonged fatigue should go to a medical facility. People who detect abnormal liver enzyme levels should also be assessed by a doctor to determine the cause.
