Healthy vagina has a natural scent, slightly like musk and completely normal. But if the smell becomes strong, fishy or uncomfortable, it may be a sign of infection, hormonal changes or improper hygiene. Dr. Manvi Verma, a cosmetic gynecologist and female sexual health expert in New Delhi, India shared 9 simple and easy tips below.
Keep the area closed and dry
Washing the closed area every day with warm water is the first and most important step. Put them in a clean towel and avoid moisturizing them as moisture is an ideal environment for bacteria and fungi to grow, says Dr. Verma.
Avoid harmful habits
deeply washing, washing too much, using fragrant soap or wearing tight underwear are habits that can disrupt the natural pH balance. According to Verma: "Choreography has the ability to clean itself. Strong cleaning products only cause disruption to the microbiome, causing odor and irritation".
Prioritize cotton underwear
Cotton helps the closed area breathe and reduce sweating accumulation. General lining retains moisture and heat, creating conditions for bacteria to grow. Change your underwear every day and avoid wearing too much.
Drink enough water
Water is not only good for the skin but also helps the body eliminate toxins, keep vaginal tissue moist, healthy, and stabilize pH, a core element to prevent odor.
Avoid irritants
colored toilet paper, foaming shower gel, strong-smelling detergent, or sanitary bang with fragrance can all cause skin irritation in the closed area. Choose unscented, gentle products.
Maintaining hygiene during menstruation
Use quality products, replace the sanitary equipment on time, wash your hands before and after changing, and wear airy clothes. Just do the basic things right, you have to protect your closed area from odor and infection, says Dr. Verma.
Safe and clean sex Using condoms, hand washing and cover before and after sex, and cleaning sex toys, if any, are all important steps to reduce the risk of infection and change the smell of the vaginal smell.
Eat and drink selectively
Some foods that help improve health and scent in closed areas. Yogurt contains Lactobacillus that helps balance pH; cranberry juice helps prevent urinary tract infections; pineapple and apple improve natural scent. Ginger, lemon, celery and cinnamon extract also help detoxify and balance hormones, two important factors affecting vaginal smell, adds Dr. Verma.
Avoid home remedies of unknown origin
Putting apple cider vinegar, garlic, or yogurt in the vagina is a dangerous trend online. These tips can cause burns, irritation, or make the condition worse, warns Dr. Verma. If you notice an unusual smell, strange secretions or itching, see your doctor instead of self-treating.
