9 winter pregnancy care tips to keep warm and healthy

Winter poses many risks for pregnant women, from seasonal infections to vitamin D deficiency. Proper care helps mothers stay healthy and fetuses develop safely.

Cold weather, dry air and limited sunlight can silently affect the health of both mother and fetus. In the context that a woman's body has undergone many hormonal and physical changes, winter, if not properly cared for, can increase the risk of infection, fatigue and immunodeficiency.

According to Dr. Payal Narang, an obstetrician and gynecologist at Motherhood Hospital, Pune (India), just small adjustments in daily life can help pregnant women experience winter safely and more comfortably. “Relational nutrition, drinking enough water, keeping the body warm and following medical instructions are key factors to protect mother and baby health,” she emphasized.

Common problems during pregnancy in winter

Pregnant women in winter often face many characteristic discomforts. Cold and dry air makes the skin easily lose moisture, causing dryness, itching, and cleft lipstick. Reduced thirst in cold weather also makes many pregnant women drink less water, increasing the risk of dehydration.

Besides, the immune system during pregnancy is already weakened. "Pregnancy reduces natural immunity, making women susceptible to colds, coughs, flu and viral infections," Dr. Payal Narang said. Less exposure to sunlight also reduces vitamin D synthesis, leading to fatigue and joint pain.

Low temperatures can also make stiff joints and muscle pain more obvious, especially in the last months of pregnancy. In addition, seasonal infections such as flu and viral fever, if not treated promptly, can negatively affect both mother and fetus. Prolonged dehydration also causes constipation, headache, dizziness and increases the risk of urinary tract infections.

9 tips to help pregnant women stay healthy in winter

To safely get through winter, pregnant women should proactively apply some practical care measures.

First of all, it is necessary to dress warmly and keep the body warm by wearing many layers of clothing to easily adjust body temperature. Covering the chest, legs and head is especially important in the early morning and late at night.

Drinking enough water is still a mandatory requirement, even in cold weather. Warm water, dill or warm lemon juice can help maintain hydration and support digestion, reduce fatigue and headaches.

Diet should prioritize seasonal, nutritious foods such as oranges, carrots, spinach, astragalus and sweet potatoes to supplement vitamins, antioxidants and fiber. Conversely, pregnant women should limit snacks and processed foods because they can weaken the immune system and cause bloating.

Safe sun exposure is also very important. According to Dr. Narang, spending about 10 - 20 minutes each day under light sunlight helps the body synthesize natural vitamin D, supporting bone health for both mother and fetus.

The use of functional foods such as calcium, vitamin D or vitamin E needs to strictly follow the doctor's instructions, absolutely do not arbitrarily use drugs during pregnancy. Pregnant women also need to protect themselves from infectious diseases by keeping their hands hygienic, avoiding crowded places and wearing masks when going out.

In addition, gentle exercises or walking, if allowed by a doctor, will help improve blood circulation and reduce joint stiffness. Finally, adequate sleep and a comfortable living environment, humidifiers can be used, playing an important role in boosting immunity and restoring the body.

Dr. Payal Narang recommends that if signs such as prolonged fever, severe cough, dizziness, abnormal swelling or fetal movement reduction appear, pregnant women should contact a doctor immediately for timely examination to avoid unfortunate complications.

It's a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit.
