Doctor CKII Le Thi Dan Thuy - Head of the Department of Nephrology and Blood Leakage, Binh Dan Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City - said that the transition from mild kidney failure (stage 1-2) to the final stage (stage 5) can happen quickly if the patient is not treated properly and does not control risk factors.
The cause can come from underlying diseases such as lupus redness, IGA nephritis, or from the use of uncontrolled drugs such as herbal medicine, traditional medicine, floating functional foods, antibiotics, and long-term high-dose painkillers. In addition, infections, prolonged diarrhea, cesarean section or electrolyte disorders are also factors that promote more severe acute renal failure.
According to Dr. Thuy, if detected early in the early stages, the patient can maintain stable kidney function for 16-20 years with proper treatment. In contrast, late detection means taking time for intervention and increasing the risk of death.
Regular examination helps doctors monitor kidney function index, thereby adjusting the appropriate treatment regimen. At the same time, doctors also advise on a diet to reduce protein, reduce salt, reduce potassium, control blood pressure, blood sugar and treat complications such as anemia, electrolyte disorders...
Doctor Dan Thuy warned that the rate of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in Vietnam is currently about 12.8% of the adult population, equivalent to 8.7 million people, in which the trend is getting younger. Habits such as staying up late, eating on the juice, taking side effects, and prolonged stress are contributing to the increase in early kidney failure cases in young people.
In reality, many young people only detect the disease when they have severe symptoms such as small urine, leg swelling, fatigue, pale skin, amoniac smell, or uncontrollable high blood pressure.
People with kidney failure need to cooperate closely with doctors, comply with treatment and make lifestyle changes, Dr. Thuy emphasized.
In addition to a light diet and drinking enough water throughout the day, patients should exercise appropriately according to instructions, manage stress through meditation, yoga or relaxation activities.
Family also plays an important role in providing spiritual support, helping patients maintain confidence in treatment. With the advancement of modern medicine, many new methods have helped slow the progression of diseases and improve the quality of life if detected and treated properly.
Take the initiative to have regular health check-ups and listen to your body. Kidney failure is no longer a disease of the elderly - it is an existing risk for anyone who lives without science today.
