Doctor repairs kidneys on the outside of the body, successfully transplanted to a patient

Doctors at 108 Central Military Hospital have just performed a minor surgery: removing a kidney from the body to "repair" a blood vessel and transplant it back.

Keeping a kidney that seemed to have to be removed

The patient is a female, 37 years old, from Dak Lak, admitted to the hospital with persistent left lower back pain. According to the patient, about 2 months ago, the patient had left lumbar pain, sometimes the pain became acute, not spreading, no fever. The patient went to many major hospitals in the South for examination and was diagnosed with a giant aneurysm of the left renal artery in the renal capillary capillary and was prescribed dialysis.

Through imaging diagnosis, doctors discovered a giant lump of nearly 5cm in the left kidney navel, in which the branches of the blood vessels that nourish the kidneys all originated from the lump - making stent interventions impossible.

"This aneurysm has caused pain, signaling a high risk of rupture, requiring urgent treatment. However, the location of the lesion makes it impossible to regenerate the kidney artery in the body" - Dr. Ngo Vi Hai, Head of the Department of Thoracic Surgery, said. The only solution is to remove the kidneys, regenerate blood vessels, and perform a transplant an extremely complex technique.

"This aneurysm has caused pain, signaling a high risk of rupture, requiring urgent treatment. However, the location of the lesion makes it impossible to regenerate the kidney artery right in the body" - Dr. Ngo Vi Hai, Head of the Department of Thoracic Surgery, 108 Central Military Hospital said.

The only solution is to remove the kidneys, regenerate blood vessels, and then perform a transplant an extremely complex technique, Dr. Ngo Vi Hai shared.

Combining two specialties, the surgery lasted 4 hours

To preserve the kidney, the surgical team consisting of doctors from the above urology and vascular surgery consulted and decided to perform endoscopic surgery to remove the kidneys, reconstruct the body's capillary vessels and transplant them back into the pelvic cavity. During the reconstruction, the bulged artery was replaced with an autologous vein section.

Dr. Nguyen Viet Hai - Head of the Department of Urinology, 108 Central Military Hospital - shared: "The time of kidney anemia must not exceed 30 minutes. Therefore, we have to coordinate closely to both regenerate blood vessels and protect the kidneys according to the correct kidney transplant technique".

The surgery lasted nearly 4 hours and went smoothly. After the transplant, kidney function was restored well, ultrasound showed stable blood flow. In particular, because this is an autologous kidney transplant, the patient does not have to use anti-plant waste medicine.

Currently, the patient's health has recovered well, and he can walk and live normally. In the world, such complex renal aneurysm treatments are rare; in Vietnam, this is the first case to be successfully treated.

According to Dr. Ngo Vi Hai, this success demonstrates a breakthrough in treatment thinking and demonstrates the power of interdisciplinary coordination. It opens up a new direction in kidney preservation for patients with complex vascular damage.
