Every Tet holiday, the story of weight gain and blood fat "escalating" becomes a concern for many people, especially those with cardiovascular diseases. BS.CKII Pham Xuan Hau - Head of Cardiology Department, Hong Duc II General Hospital said that the cause comes not only from lavish meals but also from the habit of eating sugary jams and cakes.
On average, 100g of Tet jam can contain 350-500 kcal, mainly from refined sugar. When it enters the body, this amount of sugar rapidly increases blood sugar, stimulates fat accumulation, especially dangerous for people with high blood pressure, dyslipidemia or heart disease," Dr. Hau analyzed.
According to doctors, instead of extreme dieting, people can switch to using nutritious nuts as a healthier snack solution. Nuts such as walnuts, almonds, cashews, macadamia are rich in unsaturated fats, protein and fiber, which help create a feeling of fullness for a long time and limit overeating.
Good fats in seeds have the ability to reduce LDL-cholesterol (bad fat), while supporting the increase of HDL-cholesterol (good fat), thereby contributing to protecting cardiovascular health. In addition, magnesium, vitamin E and antioxidants in seeds also help stabilize blood pressure and reduce inflammation of blood vessel walls," BS.CKII Pham Xuan Hau added.
However, doctors advise that you should only eat about a handful (20-30g) per day, prioritizing wild roasted seeds, not soaked in sugar or salt. For people with cardiovascular diseases, controlling portion sizes and periodic check-ups are still key factors to protect long-term health.
