A 2021 study published in the European Journal of Cardiology followed 2,070 adults participating in the framingham Cardiovascular Research, measuring the amount of exercise they performed.
Accordingly, researchers found that moderate or vigorous exercise, such as brisk walking from 100 to 129 steps/minute or more than 130 steps/minute - is ideal for health and is actually three times more beneficial than walking at a regular pace (about 60 to 99 steps per minute).
"We found that exercising at a moderate intensity will lead to better peak exercise performance. Walking with faster steps is also more effective than regular walking in starting the body, Matthew Nayor, a cardiologist at Boston Medical Center (USA) and the lead author of the study explains.
"If your goal is to improve your health or slow down physical decline, do exercises that require more effort, such as brisk walking, to be 3 times more efficient than just walking at a normal pace," Nayor added.
In addition, Nayor's team found that brisk walking can actually combat some health problems related to a sedentary lifestyle.
"We observe that people who walk with more steps and faster will have higher than average physical fitness, no matter how much time they spend moving," Nayor said.
If you are looking to improve your overall health or simply lose weight, it is not necessary to give up your daily walking routine with an overloading exercise, instead you can walk a little faster, increasing the speed compared to normal.
