BS.CK2 Nguyen Minh Tien - Deputy Director of the City Children's Hospital said that the patient died on the night of June 1 after many days of treatment in critical condition.
According to Dr. Tien, when transferred from Ca Mau to Ho Chi Minh City, the baby suffered burns of degree 2-3 on more than 90% of his body area. Many areas of his limbs were burned black, accompanied by respiratory burns, burn shock and multiple organ damage.
This is an extremely severe burn case. The child was admitted to the hospital in a state of severe shock, the prognosis was very cautious from the beginning," Dr. Tien shared.
Immediately after receiving the patient, doctors performed shock resuscitation, intravenous fluids, albumin infusion, blood transfusion, ventilator support and intensive treatment in the intensive care unit.
During treatment, the child patient continuously faced many dangerous complications. The treatment team had to perform continuous hemodialysis to support the damaged organs, use antibiotics, broad-spectrum antifungal drugs and intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) to enhance infection resistance.
In addition, doctors repeatedly cut and removed necrotic tissue, removing parts of skin and tissue that had died due to severe burns. Biological gauze and antibacterial gauze are also used to support the wound recovery process.
However, due to the excessively large burn area and the severe severity of the injury, the patient's condition is becoming increasingly severe.
We have applied all possible intensive resuscitation and treatment measures, but the burn injuries are too severe. In the end, the patient did not survive," Dr. Tien said.
According to initial information, the fire occurred on the morning of May 17 at a house in Phong Thanh commune, Ca Mau province. The mother was said to have hugged her child to shield her when the fire broke out, but both were severely burned. The father died on the way to the hospital, the mother died a day later. The baby boy was the last person in the family to be actively treated by doctors.
From this painful case, Dr. Tien said that fire burns are always one of the most dangerous forms of burns because the flames continue to burn and cause deep damage to tissues. Unlike boiling water burns that usually only occur for a short time, fire burns can quickly cause tissue necrosis, respiratory tract damage and lead to multiple organ failure.
Experts recommend that when a fire occurs, the top priority is to quickly extinguish the fire by using blankets, thick cloth or flammable materials to cover the victim, helping to prevent oxygen from fueling the fire. After initial first aid, the victim needs to be taken to the nearest medical facility as soon as possible.
According to Dr. Tien, cases of fire burns with an area of over 50-60% of the body often have very severe prognosis, requiring a long treatment process and facing many dangerous complication risks. Therefore, preventing fire and explosion incidents in the family is still the most important solution to avoid similar painful losses.
