On July 21, Hue Central Hospital held a discharge ceremony for four pediatric patients, including three allogeneic bone marrow transplants for Thalassemia treatment and one autologous bone marrow transplant - marking the 50th case at the hospital. This is an important milestone in the treatment journey of hemorrhage and cancer in children in the Central Highlands region.
From November 2019 to present, the hospital has successfully performed 60 stem cell transplants in children, including 50 autologous transplants to treat thick tumor diseases and 10 allogeneic transplants to treat congenital hemorrhage Thalassemia.
In particular, in less than 1 year, the hospital has successfully performed 10 allogeneic transplants. In which there were two cases of blood group disagreement, applying immunohistochemical harmonization techniques for the first time in Vietnam. This technique helps preserve the maximum number of stem cells, increasing the recovery rate after transplantation.
A typical case is T.T.D. (5 years old, Lam Dong) - the 50th autologous transplant, with a high-risk neuroblastoma, has recovered well after 28 days of the transplant. Meanwhile, three Thalassemia patients, including children in Kon Tum, Bac Giang and Da Nang, all recovered white blood cells and platelets after the transplant, even in cases of blood group disagreement or disease genetics.
According to Prof. Dr. Pham Nhu Hiep - Director of Hue Central Hospital, the above successes not only help children escape the dependence of blood transfusion but also open up the prospect of treating many other serious diseases such as Myasthenia gravis, immunodeficiency and recurrent cancer.
