The Ministry of Health has just issued a decision on recognizing Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital, Quang Ninh province as qualified to perform the technique of removing and grafting kidneys from living donors and from brain-dead donors.
This is the first hospital in Quang Ninh qualified to perform a kidney transplant.
It is expected that this April, Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital will perform the first kidney transplant.
Previously, in April 2024, Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital was the first provincial-level unit in the country to successfully remove multiple organs from a brain-dead donor, saving the lives of 7 patients. This success is a premise for the unit to urgently develop a project, comprehensively preparing for the implementation of kidney transplantation - a technique that requires high professional qualifications, modern facilities and strict interdisciplinary coordination procedures.
For more than a year, Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital has invested in infrastructure and established specialized units to serve the transplantation process such as an artificial kidney walk area, intensive care unit, kidney removal - transplantation surgery room, post-operative resuscitation system... The entire system ensures closed, one-way operation, meeting technical standards on sterilization and biosafety. Medical equipment is invested in modern and synchronously, from MRI, CT- sc scanner imaging diagnostic systems to dialysis machines, ECMO machines, renal endoscopy machines and specialized surgical support equipment.
Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital has also signed a professional cooperation agreement with Vietnam - Germany Friendship Hospital to receive technical transfer and train a team of doctors. 60 medical staff of the Hospital have been well trained in the steps in the organ transplant process, from donor assessment, organ preservation to transplantation and post-operative care.
Currently, Quang Ninh has nearly 1,000 patients with kidney disease, of which about 30% are indicated for kidney transplantation. The implementation of kidney transplantation techniques locally not only helps patients reduce cost pressure and waiting time, but also opens up opportunities for high-quality healthcare access right in the province.
Along with Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital, Quang Ninh General Hospital is also in the process of completing the kidney transplantation process.
