On February 11, Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Xuan Co, Director of Bach Mai Hospital, said: Bach Mai Hospital has successfully deployed the electronic medical record system since November 2024, becoming the first special-class hospital nationwide to perform paperless medical examination and treatment. This helps to store and manage online all information about the patient's health status, medical history and treatment process, thereby improving the effectiveness of diagnosis and treatment, minimizing errors, saving time and costs.
Notably, not printing X-rays, CT scans, MRIs and related documents alone has helped the hospital save about 100 billion VND per year. This money is reinvested to upgrade the information technology system and promote the hospital's digital transformation process.
"The application of electronic medical records not only helps reduce the cost of printing and storing documents, but also facilitates medical facilities to easily share patient information, enhancing continuity in treatment, especially important for chronic diseases or diseases requiring long-term monitoring. In addition, data from electronic medical records also supports analysis and provides appropriate treatment options for each patient, optimizing treatment effectiveness," Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Xuan Co added.
The transition to electronic medical records at Bach Mai Hospital is an important step in modernizing healthcare processes, improving the quality of medical services and optimizing resources.
This is also one of the 6 pillars of Bach Mai Hospital implementing the Hospital Development Project: Effectively implementing the multi-organ transplant project at the Hospital; Promoting digital transformation, applying artificial intelligence in diagnosis, treatment and patient management; Applying gene therapy techniques in disease treatment; Applying stem cell technology in disease treatment; Applying Robot surgery; Applying 3D printing technology in manufacturing medical products and equipment to serve patients.
According to Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Xuan Co, Bach Mai Hospital and Cho Ray Hospital were assigned to be the medical data connection point. Currently, Bach Mai has successfully connected with Bac Ninh General Hospital and plans to expand nationwide.
According to Associate Professor Co, the construction of a national health data warehouse is of great significance, not only supporting policy making, scientific research, and human resource training, but also helping to optimize the planning of medicines and equipment. When the interconnected system is complete, tests and films can be shared between hospitals, significantly reducing costs for patients.

Digital transformation also enables doctors at Bach Mai Hospital to read diagnostic imaging results from provincial facilities such as Lao Cai, helping to improve the quality of remote consultation and treatment.
Not only does it provide professional support, digital transformation also helps hospitals optimize financial management, supplies, and medicines. Thanks to the smart tracking system, the shortage of medicines or medical equipment due to slow bidding is significantly reduced, ensuring that the medical examination and treatment process is not interrupted.
